I have a confession to make.....I love Martha Stewart! I have admired her homemaking skills for a number of years. Although I could never live up to those kind of expectations with my busy family and 2 dogs, I have always longed to be that organized one day!

When I look at those beautiful pictures of simple, perfectly organized closets and drawers, well...it makes me feel good and I'm motivated to strive to live this way.

How I react to this is no different than potential buyers react when viewing a home for sale.

Organized closets and cabinets are a must when selling your home. Potential buyers will be opening and looking through them all to make sure there is enough space for everything.  I tell my clients to make it look like “Martha Stewart” lives here.

Use bins and baskets to put loose items in and create a simple, clean, organized look and feel to the space.  Use matching fluffy towels folded neatly in the linen closet -with a few scented dryer sheets in between.

Going the extra mile with organization subconsciously  tells potential buyers that the homeowners have properly cared for and maintained the home.Visually showing organized spaces also delights the buyer as they aspire to live that kind of life in your home.

Okay...your assignment: Make it look like Martha Stewart lives here!  It's a good thing!

Great tips...and I'm a Martha Stewart fan too!  I remember an episode of her show dubbed, "Folding towels-101"--and it was just that.  Amazing.

Teresa,

Great comments and tips on striving to have an organized home, especially for staging.  That is a great goa to have.  For most people, a wonderful solution is to have lots of handly baskets that can be used to store extra toys, items or miscellaneous things that can accumulate for those occupied staged homes.  Of course, when you have vacant homes, you do not have that challenge as much.  Just an idea.

Have a Colorful Day!

Teresa, absolutely right tips! Coming from the realtor side, it is pretty funny that buyers know that they dont buy the pots and pans, the silverwares in the drawers. They know they will not get the food in the fridge too. But somehow, it's just normal to "browse". Some people perceived that a well-organized house is a well-maintained home.

The photos are great and something to pass onto sellers when they are getting ready to sell.  A picture is worth a thousand words.....................

Teresa - I love Martha, too!  (A couple of neighbors call me Martha... I'm guessing it's a compliment!)  You know when things are organized, living is easier - and I think you are spot on in that if people see organized closets and cupboards, they'll want to "live like that" in that home, too.  It's pyschological, but it works.  Same concept about the clean closets = well taken care of home.

When I'm doing consultations and see a full closet, I tell my clients, "Remember what your mother  - or Martha Stweart - always told you: If you haven't worn it in 2 years, throw it away or give it away! "

Now I'll have to add Towel Folding 101 to my script!

Thanks for the great post!

As much as I'd love to live this way too, I think I'll keep my sanity and opt for the organized chaos that is my life...now if I'm selling....;-)

Hi Teresa  - We are currently working with a staging client who is very "Martha-like".  She has her closet color coded, all her pantry items are "faced" (she says her dad was a grocer and it's just a habit she picked up from him) and the rest of her home is as neat as a pin.  She needs our help because her home feels cold and sterile, so we are injecting color and texture for her.

I have tried to do this with my own linen closet but it doesn't last long.  I am now motivated to go do it again.  I get that same sort of feeling you do by looking at linen closets that are organized with fluffy towels.

Hi Teresa,

I love an organized closet or drawer. It makes me feel calm. I always do the kitchen and bathroom cabinets for my clients.

Here is my most recent medicine cabinet. All the medication is hidden in the baskets.

Great advice and photos.  I have only staged one closet.  I always speak to clients about organizing their closets, but don't spend time discussing the details with them.  I will make sure that I add that important factor to my list.

Thanks for the information.

Teresa,

After reading your great post, I thought I would share a email I received from one of my clients that I recently staged!  I guess Martha's wearing off on me too!

HiMichelle,                                                                                                                                                             Things are going great!  I feel like I'm living in Martha Stewart's home!  I've had plenty of action since the Open House last Sunday. Laura has booked at least 3 appointments daily. I must admit it was easier when I was working. My job ended on Wednesday so now I have to scurry out of the house at various times of the day. Had one written offer by Tues. (too low) and another one should be coming. I remain excited about my new adventure. You and Justine did a fabulous job and I'm keeping everything just as you left it! Hope to see you soon...when you're collecting your stuff!                                           Peggy                                                                                                                                                                                P.S. Please give me a price on the bedspread, I'm very fond of it.

This was a very nice email, makes my job so worthwhile when I receive these types of comments!  Just had to share it with you because it related to your blog!

Organized closets and drawers are my favorite...pantries, love em!  I don't know what it is, but putting things in order gives me the greatest pleasure!  Love this post!

Organized, attractive closets are the epitomy of a 'got it together' lifestyle. These examples show all the benefits of staging, not only for selling, but for everyday!

I enjoyed this post - thanks, Teresa.

By the way, while on vacation in Florida I chose to spend my time cleaning my parents' closet!  Whenever I visit there, I always clean out their refrigerator.  People think I'm crazy, but there is something so satisfying!

I love Martha too!  I'll be sure to mention Martha when asking clients to organize their clothes and linen closets, I've had people look at me in disbelief that it would make a difference, but fortunately for me, they do it.  When done, they can't stop talking about how great things look.  Then that's when I say to them, imagine how the buyer is going to feel.  Good post.  Now if only I could keep things that organized in my own home!!!
