Yuck.  Did you know that Texas leads the nation in boating accidents so far this year?  That is quite embarrassing considering we only have one natural lake in the whole state!  Ouch!  We have to change this.

Coast Guard

Here are some statistics compiled by the US Coast Guard:

  • 710 fatalities - 3,474 injuries - nearly $44 million in property damage due to boating accidents.
  • 90 percent of drowning victims were not wearing life jackets.
  • Alcohol was the leading contributing factor in approximately one-fifth of all boating fatalities.
  • About 70 percent of all boating fatalities occurred on boats where the operator had not received boating safety instruction.

So, where do we start?  For one, please visit this web-site:  Boating Safety Web-site for the U.S. Coast Guard

Life VestThen, follow these simple, seemingly obvious, rules for an accident free summer:

  1. 1. ALWAYS wear a life vest!  Come on folks, which is more important, looking cool in your bathing suit or being alive?!?
  2. 2. NEVER boat under the influence.  HELLO!?!?  You think DUI is dangerous?  Throw the drunk in the water and see what happens.
  3. 3. Take a boating safety course.  You took driver's ed, right?

Sorry to be cynical.  I just cringe every time I hear of a darling person dying on our area lakes in a preventable accident.  Let's loose this title before we loose more lives!  Come on Texas!   This is one title we WANT to give up!

Gee I never thought of Texas as a big boating state.  Guess I forgot about that long coastline!  Veronica

Is that for one year?  If so that is very high.  Here in Louisiana we have lakes and streams everywhere.

We might only have one natural lake but we have a ton of man-made ones and that is where everyone was this weekend!

Sara,  I see you don't know a lot about the lakes in Texas we have  more lake water acres than most any state in the U.S. and some of the largest.  We did live on PK Lake almost a hundred miles long and not the biggest in Texas. Google Rivers in Texas and be shocked at the total. Also check Lakes in Texas.  We even add to the Mississippi water shed.

Too much booze and not wearing life vests.  Probably the drinkers are not wearing life vests.  Just pretty supid behavior.

Sara:  I think that several facts add to this statistic.  As Don said above, Texas has a great number of lakes.  Secondly, with our Texas weather, our boating season... can be pretty much all year long.  And thirdly, just as many Texans enjoy driving around in their pick'em-up-trucks slurping on a brewski... that is also, for them anyway, just a normal part of "boating."  It's kind of like a "perfect storm" for an accident.

Linda:  Don't you think it is about time that Texas had at least one "woman-made lake ?"  :)

Sara, that surprises me, I would have guessed Michigan would be the leader. We lead most every thing else, unemployment, short sales, etc..... lol

Veronica: Cute comment (0;  We boat here... almost everyone has a bass boat!!  (0;  Just a little Texas humor!

John: I believe those statistics are for last year.  But, that is why I gave the link to the Coast Guard web-site.  They were not real clear!

Linda: In this heat, can you blame them?!?

Don: Buddy, friend, I am a Texan and I in fact do know about our lake situation.  I said we had one naturallake.  The others are man-made... or, as Karen said, possibly women =-made (0;  The point was actually to give a fun Texas fact along with the information.  Caddo Lake is the only lake in the entire state left here by God.  The others were our doing (0;
