The Second Wind Effect

By

Marathon CartoonOne of my hobbies for quite some time has been running. I have been in the stealth mode lately which has been to set a goal of completing a half marathon. Stealth because if you tell too many people they keep asking you when you've completed the goal, and I want the pressure to come from me and not them. I love running though. I love that it is so freeing and challenging and you can keep rising to higher levels. In running there is something called

               THE SECOND WIND EFFECT.

This takes place about the one half to two thirds mark where you suddenly feel stronger and really start cruising to the finish. You kick it in.

I've seen it in real estate where buyers drop out for awhile and come back rejuvenated and head to the finish line in a purchase. Sellers can back away too and come back with remodeling or Staging and finish strong.

Marathon Motto

In life, this second wind comes in the form of encouraging words. Who cannot use that in their lives? Some days we all just lose energy. We get the blues. We feel down. Don't think you are immune to this. Even with a tough internal constitution you get thrown off balance due to external circumstances, health problems, relationship problems. This is why I am always recommending you build a tight circle of encouragers around you who will not leave your side. They will be the safety net for you that will help you find your second wind.

Early on in my running days I didn't believe in this second wind idea. Why I go through life as a hard headed doubting Thomas all the time is beyond me? Seems like I have to validate everything. But running past the four mile mark early one day I sagged, then I surged. There it was, the second wind.

Hot Tub Backyard

Like an oasis you have found in your life, stick close to those friends with the encouraging and uplifting words. They will give you that second wind every time you need it.

They will give you

   PEP IN YOUR STEP !!!

Gary - good for you and a good blog. I used to run the sprints, 100 - up to 1/4 mile. No time for a second wind.

I find that I have more and more been trying to associate with those more positive, those that can provide those kind words that can lift me emotionally, spiritually, socially & professionally.

Thanks for the reminder.

Mike: Wow, a sprinter. You must really be fast. I have ran the 880 and mile runs but was never that fast in those. I was "terrible" in the 50 yard dash. I think it has to do with the fast twitch muscles and being better at endurance. Get me past a mile though and all the smokers in the group started dropping off like flies. Past two miles and I was on my own in the clear. We all need each other as encouragers. Find as many as you can and encourage them too. We may have our good days sure, but that black cloud day will hit you when you least expect it and then you dial up that circle you've built around you. It works wonders. Join in the fun around these parts!

Gary -thanks, but no longer so fast, too many years and too many beers (and pizza and burgers and pasta), but mostly too much time behind a desk. I was actually in the top 25 in the country in the sprints when I was a senior in high school in SoCal. Don't jog anymore, arthritic hips.

Keep up the great work, both in the running and in writing.

Mike: We all have our day in the sun for various activities and then we move on to the next phase,  (beer drinking?, do we have competitions for that? : )  Do the best, wherever you are at in life.

Gary,  So very true & love your cartoons!  I only run 3 miles lately, but I understand the effect that you are talking about only too well.  I used to jog & have been running lately and once I pass the midway mark it just seems to be easier.  In fact, I've been running faster the second half and sometimes for longer.  But, yes, this is so true of our lives and human nature.  Very prophetic and introspective of you.

Hi Gary,

You're right about the 2nd wind. For me at times it has come from the encouragement of others along the side lines. Running (I say that loosley for what I do) is about the journey, the same as in real estate for me. It's those people you see and experience along the way, othes in your race and spectators on the sidelines.

So which 1/2 are you doing? I done some wonderful ones myself. My favoriite has always been the San Deigo AFC 1/2 in beautiful San Diego, in August each year.  Good luck!

Gary - I am not a runner (well, I had a short stint as one). But, my daughter was a distance runner and I learned a lot from the "sport" which I have incorporated into my business, specifically setting goals and not competing or measuring up against others, but instead the focus is on my own goals and challenging myself to always do better from year to year. Envy can be evil, I'd rather be my own pacesetter!

TLW: I have a treasure trove of cartoons. Don't get me started : )

Marc: Glad you have experienced the second wind and know about it in life and business too.

Dan: Promoting people, that is a good phrase. It is where I focus. Thanks.

Lynda: I am targeting something local for a half marathon probably in September or October. We're still pretty hot here in September so if then it better be a real early race.

Carol: Stay away from envy, you are so right about that. Setting your own goals is my philosophy too and learning like you said from your daughter to also pace yourself.

Colleen: I'll need your cheers, so be LOUD!! ; )

Gary, WOW, you are a fast runner AND a fast writer... I don't know how you run these days but I know that I hardly keep up with your writing speed. -;)

For sure, you are the wind beneath my wings...  and I know that for many others here. You are a real force of encouragement and wisdom... a great friend always good to have around.

Arina: I have a lot to accomplish, that's why it seems like things go fast. You, and many others here on Active Rain with your many talents ALWAYS inspire me. My wind beneath my wings. It just comes back to you, and I always love having you around and in my life good friend.

Liz: I'll have to hear that story. Is that like an oasis in the desert? I like nectarines.
