We Need to Support the Little Guys!!!

By
Real Estate Agent with Arizona Luxury & Lifestyle Living

As I was driving to the office this morning I decided a large non-fat latte (with sugar free hazelnut) was in order. Now... having moved from the Seattle area AND having been in the specialty food business when the big "S" really started taking off I knew there were any number of locations I could get my poison.

But I decided that instead of going to the most obvious choice for my morning coffee habit, I would support the "little guy", Toshi's Roast. It wasn't meant to be this morning though, because as I started to pull up I saw the "closed" sign on the door. My hope is that Randy and his family just took a nice 4th of July weekend trip. But who knows? A couple of the businesses around him have disappeared and the last time I spoke to him he told me it had surprised him how much his business had dropped off after the "snowbirds" left town.

Here in the Surprise, AZ area we have a large number of active retirement communities. Because the populations in these communities have a tendancy to dwindle in the summer months many of our mom & pop retailers, in close proximity, suffer. In fact some of them end up having to close their doors permanently.

I find this disheartening as these are the very businesses that make a community unique. If all we have are the national chains that can weather the slower summer months here in Surprise, than we might as well be Anytown, USA.

So, for those of you that live here year round, please take time to visit these locally owned businesses. They need our support to not only survive but to thrive. And I want to see our community attract more of these home town businesses. Unique is what will make our community desirable and attractive to people looking for a place to call home.

Hi Kathy,  Ours is also a destination/resort areaa highly dependeant upon our snowbirds.  After they have left we get our island back to ourselves.  Toward that end I always suggest to folks that we need to support the little mom & pop operations during the off season.  Still, it is hard to make it and they sometimes have to close the doors.  Our Realtor group also has to find ways to make it through another season !

Bill - Thank you for taking the time to comment!  Yes, it can be difficult during the "off" season for businesses and real estate brokers alike.  We are fortunate our offices are all in highly visible areas and we have the lions share of the Sun Cities business.  We've seen many other offices in the surrounding communities close their doors.

Glad to see you supporting your ocal businesses.  Sadly the national franchises dominate the market her in NJ as well.  I do try to patronize the non-franchise local restaurants. Happy selling. Veronica

Good afternoon Kathy- it seems like all of our retailers are having problems in this down time, not just the mom and pop.

Supporting local businesses is a must!  They are getting fewer and farther between here in Northern VA, but you can still find them.

Veronica, Jennifer & Pam - Thank you so much for your comments!  While retail is down in many locations, at least the national guys have deeper pockets to ride it out.  Thanks for your efforts to support your local "little guys".

Chris - When I had my own specialty food brokerage in Washington state I loved promoting and distributing the cottage industry products.  Then that industry started changing.  It became harder and harder for the local manufacturers to get shelf placement in the bigger retailers.  It would be a shame to see entrepreneurs disappear from our communities

There are times when you can get a great deal going with the "little guy". They are very dedicated to service.

I am more and more preferring to shop at Ace Hardware rather than Home Depot because of the fact it is a locally owned franchise and the service is a 100 times better. I would much rather support local businesses.  Thanks for think of the 'little guys'.

Robin - It's funny you should mention that.  I came to the same conclusion about a year and a half ago or so.  While we will always have the the warehouse stores like Home Depot and Lowe's, I too prefer the local Ace.  We have one really close to us now too.

The majority of businesses in Central Florida are small in size. Thanks for reminding me to support others of my size -- (I chose not to franchise in organizing my business because I have had experience in correlating fields). Besides I look for local businesses when I travel as they represent the culture ...

Ann - Yes, as I said in my post, that is what makes a community unique.  Surprise is a relatively new community located NW of Phoenix.  I believe the city planners are planning for a very unique community but right now the small retailers are slow in coming.  I just hope the majority of the ones that are trying are able to survive the slowing economy.
