According to a recent article released by Reuters, Las Vegas earned just over a billion dollars in April 2008.  The figure represents a 5.1 percent gaming-revenue decrease from April 2007.  Now, when you read my headline you took it as a positive thing right?  Well, the gaming-revenue fact wasn't reported as positive - its a 5.1 DECREASE, not INCREASE.

Considering the United States economy and overall real estate markets are (according to many) facing their biggest challenges since the Great Depression, is a billion-dollar month THAT bad?  2007 was a record year for Las Vegas tourism, so to only be down 5.1 percent, to me, should be a positive story.

Las Vegas has a billion-dollar month in one of the toughest economies in U.S. history!

See how easily things can be spun?  Unfortunately, everything is spun negative as of late.

Recently, I saw someone blog that Las Vegas is experiencing a layoff crisis.  The person referenced the 400 managers that were laid off by MGM MIRAGE a few moths back.  Never once was the recent announcement by Wynn Resorts that they were starting to hire for approx. 5,300 jobs for Encore in July 2008 mentioned.  So 400 jobs lost is a crisis?  And approx. 5,300 new jobs doesn't even get mentioned?  Am I missing something here?

One recent article went as far to say that the Las Vegas real estate market is so bad, that there are fears over the West Nile Virus because of mosquitoes swarming pools in the backyards of foreclosure homes.  While I don't know for sure whether this is false, true, or exaggerated, I will point out that many people felt that the article was extremely off base in many other ways.

Personally, I have not seen a single mosquito in Las Vegas in several years.  If I see one now I may run, but this just goes to show the fear that is instilled because of a negative article that may or may not be true, false, or greatly sensationalized.  And I know better than to fall for everything I read.

Just imagine the impact that all of the negative focus is having on would-be buyers of Las Vegas real estate.

Being a go-to source for the national press has its perks. Sure, it's fun to shoot the breeze with reporters from CNBC, ABC News, CBS News, and FOX News - the most important part, however, is being consistently recognized as a leader in the Las Vegas luxury real estate market. "The media just seems to love what I do," says Auxier. "I've mixed show business with real estate. It's very exciting."
