Raleigh Recreation - Looking for something to do this weekend?

As part of a tour of the State Capital or a downtown Raleigh walking tour, you won't want to miss the North Carolina Veteran's Monument.

WWII Memorial Downtown Raleigh - North Carolina Veterans Monument - Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour

The North Carolina Veterans Monument is a stately stone monument dedicated in 1990 to honor WWI, WWII, and Korean War veterans.

Each side of the base is dedicated to veterans from one of the three wars - WWI, WWII, or the Korean War.  A plaque lists major battles and depicts a battle scene.

On top of the tall granite shaft, Lady Liberty stands tall, holding a palm frond to symbolize peace and victory.

The flags of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines fly above a pillar dedicated to each.

The gardens and pathways surrounding the WWII North Carolina Veterans Monument in Raleigh are open and inviting, and there are benches that offer an opportunity to sit and reflect on what the monument stands for.

The WWII memorial is on the north side of the Raleigh State Capital Building.  Directly across Edenton street is the Agriculture Building (built in 1923) and the North Carolina Museum of History - also well worth a visit.

When you next visit downtown Raleigh, make sure to fit in a short downtown walking tour - there's a lot to see!

Leesa - It's not always intentional, it's just that there are a lot of things in the Raleigh area that are important to Veterans (and their families too) - among all the other wonderful attractions that the Triangle has to offer. Thanks....

Charles - Definitely, plan to hit at least a part of the Downtown Walking Tour while you're here.  I'll be happy to send you some maps and information!
