I thought I should share something I did over the 4th of July weekend.  I think it is  an easy way (but a lot of work) to improve your home's front yard.  Perhaps you already knew about this way but in case here it is how I got to change the way my "mailbox yard" used to look:

easy ways to improve your front yard

As a REALTOR and an homeowner (and a mother) it is very hard to find the time to give it to my home.   After a long time (long long time waiting for my husband to help me), I had decided to take some action!.  Luckily, my mother suggested this to me and offered to help me.  So after working very hard, we could get rid of all the weeds and grass and this was the result:

Don't you think it looks so much better now? If you would like to do this to your "mailbox yard", you just need to buy the red mulch and the pink borders and work hard (depending on how much weed and grass you have there).  I believe this makes your front yard nicer and if you are thinking of selling your home this would be an easy way (and inexpensive) to improve your curb's appeal.

Great job and you are practicing what you preach to sellers, when the flowers start to bloom it will really be great.

DORIS FREEMAN, Realtor - ABR (RELIANT REALTY LLC) - Yes because as you know, buyers won't even come inside the house if they don't like the front view.

I painted my mailbox, which is mounted ona picket fence.  Was a lot easier :)  But that looks great for the effort!

ARDELL DellaLoggia (Sound Realty) - that's another way ( I did it for mine too because the wood was old and dark green) and yes, it was a great effort!

the front yard is SO important!!!  Good job at adding curb appeal.  I'm a fan of potted plants as well, take them with you when you move, but adds color in the meantime.

Giuliana- Please do not take this the wrong way, because it did turn out very good, but I would just like to give you and everyone else a few little tips for those tackling this project (or similar projects) on their own.

1. Use a guide (straight piece of wood like a 2x4 works) to keep your edges straight. Also use a landscapers shovel (completely flat with no rounded edges) to dig out your boarder which will help keep the edges straight and neat.

2. When you install the scalloped edging (or other landscaping stones) bury them (in tier landscaping bury the bottom stone 1/2-3/4 of the stones height into the ground) about halfway into the ground to keep them from moving, falling over, shifting etc. (basically it helps keep them in place and looking good for years to come).

3. After you get the grass/ weeds out of the area you are working with put a layer of newspaper down, then a weed barrier (mesh or plastic, can be found at home depot/ lowes or other hardware/ landscaping stores) before installing your mulch or stones. If you are going to plant flowers or shrubs in the area either cut the newspaper and weed barrier around the plant after you install them, or tuck them around the flower/ shrub. Also before you install your mulch or stone I like to put down a weed preventative like Preen (also found at home depot/ lowes and many others).

While these little extras will cost a little bit more, and take a little more time they are all worth it :-D

Giuliana,

I like what you did!  It looks much better.  Grass doesn't grow very well in the desert, so we use crushed granite.  Cool post.
