“Believing in your dreams demands that you are prepared to receive them” Barbara J. Winter in her book Making a Living Without a Job.

The above quote from Winter’s book is written on a 3 X 5 card which is stuck in the French Memo Board that hangs at eye-level next to my computer.

Passport to home staging

That small reminder takes my mind back to the pages in which Winter describes how she realized she needed to purchase a passport if she truly believed in her dream of returning to England. The unfolding of the tale which goes from desire to dream to a trip to England is the backdrop Winters uses to help readers understand the importance of being prepared to receive their individual dreams.

When I began to understand the principles behind the story I also began to think in terms of which “passports” I needed to purchase or achieve in order to go to the place (being a great home stager) I wanted to go.

home stager's passport

Following are some examples of what items or skills (passports) I already owned when preparing for my journey:

  • Business savvy
  • Display trained background
  • Interior Design education
  • Computer
  • Cell phone
  • Desk
  • Daily Planner

Here are some examples of items or skills (passports) which I found I needed to acquire:

  • Color laser printer
  • Marketing savvy
  • Separate office space
  • Another file cabinet
  • Business alliances
  • Wide variety of staging accessories
  • Quality steamer

You get the picture – being prepared requires thoughtfulness and, yes, some time and some money.

This is the first in a 3 part series concerning being prepared to receive your dreams.

In part 2 we take a look at how a home stager can be prepared to receive his or her dreams by acquiring particular passports.

Part 3 concerns how home sellers may realize their dreams of selling their properties through being prepared with the proper passports.

Yvonne ~ This is an interesting way of thinking of what you need and what you already have.  You've got me thinking that I should make my own list, and keep it as part of my "vision board" of what I am hoping for.

Cool Kathy! What a great idea. I tend to be a list maker who prioritizes and (yep) checks off the completed tasks or purchases. How would I make that work with a vision board?

This is VERY important for people to realize!  Thank you for sharing it!

Yvonne ~ You could find words or pictures (from magazines, catalogs, newspapers) that represent your tasks or purchases and put them on a vision board, along with the things you want to happen for you (whether personal or business).

I believe that you, particularly you, Yvonne, are the kind of individual that not only can live your dream; but also help others to do so!

On that note, when have you scheduled my next therapy session -- will I need a passport?  Last I checked Atlanta to Arizona was an easy commute via cell phone!

Great post! Thx, my dear friend!

Wonderful post Yvonne.  To quote Walt Disney, "When you believe in a thing, believe in it all the way-implicitly and unquestionable.  If you can dream it, you can do it"

Great post Yvonne.  How does that saying go - Wish it, Dream it, Do it!

Positive thinking is very powerful.  Planning and setting goals as you pointed out will take you to the next level.

Melissa, you are one of those who obviously understands the difference between a dream and a notion. Thanks for commenting!

Kathy, how do you keep from overlooking your vision board? Do you spend specific time with it each day? Do you change things on it as you go along? Do you ever take things back off and wonder why that item was put there in the first place? I've heard of using these boards before and it seems the people who do are often quite successful. Great way to go!

Karen D, you never cease to make me laugh and to make me think. Now, that is cool!

When we used to live in the STATE of New Mexico we took a trip to New England. We still laugh about the day that one of the young ladies we met there asked where we were from. We told her, "New Mexico." Her reply, "Wow, you speak English very well!" So. . . I guess if we still lived there a passport might be necessary. Otherwise just pick up the phone. :)

Thanks for the fun comment!

Yes Cathy! A dream is just a dream without feet until you begin to plan and prepare. I love your Disney reference. Wasn't he such a wonderful dreamer?

Terrylynn, thank you! One way to march toward the dream is to commit. I've commited to 2 more posts in the series so I guess I MUST get busy! Am I nuts, or what?

Awesome and inspiring post.  What a wonderful quote...I will be adding it to my vision board.  My "board" is actually the inside of my bathroom vanity so I see it first thing in the morning and last thing at night.  I look forward to the next two parts!

As any athlete knows, visualization is a powerful tool. Thanks for translating this technique to our staging businesses. A great reminder... I look forward to more!

Yvonne ~ I actually just started mine after putting things randomly on my bulletin board and decided to put it all in one place.  I used a piece of foam core board and I have put it in my bedroom so that I see it in the morning while I am getting ready (and also the last thing at night).  I read each phrase, and look at the few pictures I have, so far.  I will be adding to mine as I go along.  I have some things in my head that I just need to find pictures for.  I don't know if I'll take away, maybe if I've achieved that thing.

I've heard of the success of them too, which is what prompted me to put it together.  It is probably similar to writing things down that you want to achieve, but being a visual person ; ), I think it is something that will work better for me.  Either finding the words or pictures to represent them will work for me probably better than handwriting a list.

Yvonne, thank you for this post--something I hadn't thought of in quite the same way. Home Staging is such a "visual" industry and I am guessing many Staging Professionals are also very visual--I know I am! Acting on thoughts and intentions and getting them "into view" makes sense. I'm jumping on the bandwagon, passport(s), reminders, book...

Looking forward to parts 2 and 3!

Hey Sharon, what a great idea of putting your board in a private but accessable place. I agree with you about Ms Winter's words. Her book is worth the read.

Wendy, so true! When we step to the plate we must be ready to follow the ball after we hit it and even before we hit it.

That is a great explanation Kathy! I do look like the idea of writing things down. My daughter teases me because if I write a grocery list, then forget to take it I do pretty well remembering it. If I neglect to write a list I need not attend the store at all -- I don't know what I need. Weird huh?

I'm thinking that my board would be filled with skinny women in bikinis and then it would become my hubby's board and not mine. :) Oh wait -- it has to be something one can hope to achieve right? Well that leaves out the lovely swim lasses.

Way cool Marian! You will enjoy the bandwagon so many of us ride. I do recommend the book and the ideas within the book. Barbara Winter is among those of us who tend to think a bit differently. Which is the next passport you will be seeking?

Yvonne, I love this passport idea and preparing for success.. I like the board idea also. You are so funny - bikini photos on your board - hubby would love it :-) (I don't even have that dream any more) God bless,

You know Cheryl, I would just like to find a nice bathing suit forget the bikini idea. In truth, part of my board would be covered with a couple of guys painting my master suite. Now that is a thought!

I love analogies and this is really a great one Yvonne.

Embarking on any journey needs preparation and the desire or need to go & how one prepares (mentally, physically and practically) can make the journey smooth or rough.  As one of my favorite sayings goes "the journey is the reward" and oh the journeys our family has taken this year... :-)

Yvonne, don't know how I missed this, but you have been one busy girl! Love this series. What a great time for all of us to re-assess our passports. You list some very good ones too. As with my journey that I continue to take... make it an artful and rewarding one! XXOO Lori

Well, Yvonne, once again thank you for the great info in parts II and III!!! Thanks to your lists, I am adding a couple more "passports" to my list. I am not only thankful but humbled after looking at the two warehouses and those stagers' websites, something to aspire to...
