Benedictine Sanctuary, Tucson, AZThe Roman Catholic Church is responsible for some of the most beautiful architecture in the southwest.  It started with Father Kino in the late 1700s, and the San Xavier Mission.

The Benedictine Sanctuary on Country Club Road fits right into a later chapter of Tucson's history, and to my mind, is just as distinctive.

South of Speedway, it lies on the boundary of the Sam Hughes neighborhood.

I've never stopped in, though I pass it nearly every day.

Mike,

"Benedictine Sanctuary on Country Club Road" pretty much indicates history touching the modern world, doesn't it?

I THINK this was the church where my brother's funeral was held (1993).

Terry,

Amen to that!

Mary,

Thanks for commenting.  My office is farther north on Country Club.  This is a beautiful building and setting.

Mike,

Thanks for being the first to comment.  You're right!

Love all the details of the architecture.  So much warmer and more interesting than Southern brick.. to me anyway!  Enjoying this 'series' Mike!

Mike,

You always have a nice backgorund to your photos, do you wait for the time to be just right to click or does it jsut happen?

I do like the Mission and the history the stand for in any area of the country, sorta reminds me of the 5 missions around San Antonio not to mention the Alamo.  Thanks for sharing with us.

Ha!  The neatest thing about that photo is the Palm Trees.  When you live in my area, just the photo of a Palm Tree is beautiful.  And of course, the fabulous cactus photos too.

Both of these posts on the Benedictine Sanctuary are very interesting.  And, as always, I do love your photographs!

I bet the inside is beautiful! Are you going to try and get some shots?

07/08/2008 09:38 PM by Joan Mirantz- Concord New Hampshire Realtor (Keeler Family Realtors)

Ann,

It's beautiful, isn't it?

Joan,

Yes, maam!  I surely will.

Cheron,

Thanks for stopping by to comment, and for those nice words!

Sharon,

Thanks!

Margaret,

I appreciate your comments, visits, and your blog!  Thank you.

Lenn,

Okay, to impress you, I need a map or two.  I'll be right over to your blog to cut and paste.  LOL

Don,

I don't hang out and wait for a shot, but when I see something worth photographing, I stop and grab the camera.  Thanks for commenting.

Susie,

I agree!  The carved Cantera stone takes on a life of its own.

I pass by this all of the time, but now will look with a different eye!  It is amazing what beauty one can miss in one's own area sometimes.  I'm going to have to check out the inside soon--thanks for broadening my daily horizons a bit more!

Hi Mike...I'd like to be able to say you owe us photos of the inside but I guess you don't.  Hope we get to see some anyway.

Mike - same comment about adding this to the Buildings Architecture and Dings group. When I was in Hawaii in January I saw the most fantastic rainbow I'd ever seen - wish I weren't in traffic so that I could have photographed it.

The church is so different from anything near here and that is very interesting.

This looks kind of post cardy, don't cha think?  :)  I have to say, I do not remember this church.  Of course it's possible I saw it so many times I just go used to it.

08/21/2008 10:32 PM by Phoenix Arizona Real Estate ~ Doreen McPherson (Keller Williams Arizona Realty ~ Scottsdale ~ Tempe)

Doreen,

That's true.  The monastery is just south of Speedway on the east side of Country Club.

Karen,

Thanks for commenting!

Sharon,

I took your advice.  Thanks for commenting.

Kate,

I'll visit the church and take some inside photos for another post.

Kent,

Thanks for stopping by to comment.  Let's get a cup of joe soon.
