How fair would it be if the government told you that you could not open a business unless all the current business owners in your industry approved your application?  That is the way it is in the State of Oregon as of June 2008. I read the following article - "Regulation of Oregon Moving Industry Challenged" and then confirmed it with an employee from the state.

Here are my CliffsNotes --

* Portland State College Student started a moving business - 2Brothers Moving & Delivery.

* Operated without the required license -- ooops.

* (In cities over 10,000) the state license application process notifies all existing moving companies of the new application.

* If any one of the existing moving companies protest the application, then the applicant must prove the current companies are not meeting the needs of the public. I am told that is a very difficult argument to win. (Humm, talk about the fox guarding the hen house.)

* Pacific Legal Foundation has filed a lawsuit against the State of Oregon claiming the state is restricting market entry for potential moving service providers.

Nobel Prize winner Milton Friedman has to be rolling in his grave on this one. So much for the "Free To Choose" open marketplace that he espoused in the 80s.

I understand the state's concern to protect the public interest, but I am amazed that in 2008 there are such restrictions in the moving industry.

OK Kevin, you must know how I feel about the State of Oregon.  I love Oregonians (my first boyfriend was from Eugene) but their government is about as Leftist as you can find!!!  How can they share a border with such a level headed state as Idaho!

LOL,

Disclaimer~ this was meant as an Idahoan to a former Idahoan joke, and is not taken seriously!

Pam - you and your disclaimer are funny. Oregon is politically an interesting state. Very liberal and yet for years they had a phenomenal U.S. Senator Mark Hatfield. I think you can blame all of Oregon's problems on Portland.

:)

Disclaimer - I love Portland and lived there for three years. Great city and great people.

Kevin, it is not that way with all businesses, but it has been that way in the Moving business for many, many years.   Just another way of watching over that particular industry.  I was in the moving business for about 18 years.  My brother and I wanted to start our own company and had combined 35 years experience, but this rule kept us from being able to do it

Hillarious comments on Oregon.  I have a sister, who lived in McMinnville for a couple of years, but swiftly moved to Idaho.  Now that you have explained the state differences in politics, I think I understand why!  My sister is very good at coloring within the lines. . .LOL!

Thomas - I think what you and your brother experienced is really unfortunate and goes against one of the core economic values we strongly believe in. Thank you very much for responding.

Myrl - Don't blame me for the comments on Oregon. Pam started it. :)  Actually, you can tell we both love the state, but there is sometimes a fun rivalry between Oregon and Idaho.

Absolutely no blame!  I live in California, so the idiosycracies of Oregon and Idaho pale in light of what goes on in our state!
