Colorado Springs Utilities wants an 18.6 percent increase in water rates
According to a recent article in the Colorado Springs Gazette, the Colorado Springs Utilities wants to raise
the water rates by 18.6%, the largest increase since 2000. This rate increase would result in an increase of $4.59 per month on the average residential bill.
According to the article in the Gazette, a large portion of the current deficient is due to the decline in housing; and specifically in a decline in new home hook-ups. As Colorado Springs has grown, new customers have provided a continuous revenue base which has helped subsidize the rates for the rest of the residences.
If the Colorado Springs Utilities doesn't receive approval on the tax increase; they will need to look at ways to cut expenses which could include deferred maintenance, vehicle purchases, employee training and education, community sponsorships, conservation programs and deferring several major construction projects. There is an article on the Colorado Springs Utilities web site that explains the proposed increase in more detail.
