Reuters: Toyota to add solar panels to Prius hybrid: Nikkei

Have you heard the news?   Toyota Motor Corp (TM) plans to install solar panels on its next-generation Prius hybrid cars, becoming the first major automaker to use solar power for a vehicle.

Now even though this makes me HAPPY, have you tried to purchase one of these?  Yah, you're a 6-8 month waiting list.  Geez, you would like you signed up for the lastest limited sports car, not a mass produced vehicle.  Popularity in this little hybrid is at an all time high with gas prices being what they are.

Question: If worldwide cumulative sales of the Toyota Prius have already crossed 1 million why wouldn't you think Toyota would be ANOTHER (just 1 in Japan) dedicated Prius plant?  Don't they want to make money?

10 Comments on Toyota to add solar panels to Prius: WOOHOO!

I am waiting on the super charged one that rockets around the curves and does not look like an egg

Alex.. This would be great is ALL vehicles had this.  Hopefully the patent will not stand in the way of other manufacturers to follow suit.

Alex - that's a really great idea. I guess Toyota is going with the technology that currently works. Keep your eyes open though, because before long the paint on cars, on our homes and everything else that can be painted will have carbon nano tubes that will convert the sun to electrical energy.

I recently read about a new wireless Internet company that was going to have air ships sitting geodetically above the earth but in the upper atmosphere. The skin of the ships, some people call them blimps, were to be painted with the carbon tubes and held in place with electric motors running the propellers.  Pretty cool stuff!

Great post.

Alex, solar panels is an interesting concept. We have a Prius now and it does pretty well on gas. I would imagine with solar panels it will do a lot better. Thanks.

Alex, you wish has come true!  Toyota just announced this morning that they will be building the Prius at their new (Tupelo) Mississippi Plant.  The plant is still being built but when it's completed, they will be able to meet the demand for the Prius.   :)

That's great if they build another plant and in the good U.S. of A...we need the jobs!! And why not, we're the ones that are racking up the sales of this little beauty.  Now if we could only get all the American auto makers to REALLY buy into the beauty of a less polluting car.  Yes, they have learned the hard way that the Suburban might not be the most efficient car out there but deep down I think they are old fashion and miss the nostalgia of those huge 50s cars.  I would love to see only hybrids on the road.. hopefully that day will come soon.

The integration of solar panels is great. I look forward to when they start mass producing plug in hybrids. Hopefully, that is coming down the pike soon.

That is so cool and about freaking time!  All cars should do it.

Georgina, I couldn't agree with you more!  If it was up to me, GM and the other American automakers wouldn't be in a crunch for $$ capital because they would be making hybrid cars exclusively and meeting the demand that Toyota and other can't.

It's definately time Americans and the auto industry got on board the Green train ;)
