It's funny how we human beings think. If we're told by an "expert" to do something a certain way... and we do it... and it doesn't work for us, what do we do? Try something else? Nope. We do "it" (whatever "it" is) MORE.fat

For example, let's say your doctor tells you that in order to lose weight; you need to eat less fat. (Don't get me started on the wisdom of listening to an MD for advice on nutrition, with their 3 credit hours of elective nutritional training in med school.)

But anyway, your doc advises you to eat less fat, so you obey.

You feel crummy, you're hungry all the time and you're not losing weight, so you figure... "Hmmmm, I must not be cutting out ENOUGH fat." So you eat even less fat, you feel worse, you're even hungrier and you're still not losing weight, so what do you do? Blame yourself. You aren't doing ENOUGH of what you were told to do. You suck as a human being. You're an utter failure.

Same thing with selling real estate. We're trained to cold-call, door-knock, advertise, farm, pester our friends for referrals and create a killer website. When these prospecting approaches don't work, we're advised to do it MORE. "You aren't calling ENOUGH strangers, you aren't sending out ENOUGH postcards, you aren't annoying your friends often ENOUGH, you need to spend even MORE money on your website."

I call BS.

If something isn't working, why not try something ELSE? Sure, there's honor (and some wisdom) in being persistent and patient, but I think we're all smart enough to know when something ain't right for us. If you're eating low-fat and you feel crummy (and you're still fat), try low-carb. If that doesn't work, try raw. If that doesn't work... try something ELSE.

Find what works for you. Find what's fun for you. Find what makes you smile and feel GOOD about getting up in the morning.  Because I can promise you, blindly following the crowd in our business is crazy... when you consider that the vast majority of that crowd is failing...

Hi Jennifer,

Nice post!  I agree you have to always be thinking outside the box...  Have a great week.  Michael A. Caruso

Jennifer, it all should come down to what works and what doesn't work. We shouldn't make it any more complicated than that. Doing something ELSE makes perfect sense if other things don't work. Why don't others get that?

I agree wholeheartedly Jennifer.  I have switched directions 180 degrees and have garnered far more success because of it, and saving a lot of money by doing so.  We're all creatures of habit, some habits are good, others are not.  The key to success is dropping the bad habits as quickly as possible.  Good post.

Jennifer, great post. I've seen people struggle with businesses, because they were determined not to fail, they don't realize, that it's OK to fail as long as you learn and change.

Nice post, I totally agree with you on doing what makes you feel good about getting up in the morning. Without that, one's business is going nowhere.

Good advice!     There's always a door in every wall -- trouble is, it hasn't got a visible doorknob.    Means we have to feel around for that exit into something good -- worth trying to be "out of the box", to get there!

ROFL...there was an agent in my old office who constantly asked me, "how do you get your business?"  I was more than happy to share that info with her, because it's not anything anyone is gonna "steal" - only replicate with their own SOI.  Anyway, every time I saw her, same question, same answer.  She kept telling me what was wrong with my approach while I kept smiling and scheduling settlements.  Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention.  She took her naysaying and left the business empty handed.  LOL

You have it exactly right - if it ain't working, don't fix it - nix it and move on to the next idea.

It's hard to know when enough is enough...sometimes you need to simply tough it out and other times you need to read the writing on the wall and indeed do something different.  Excellent perspective!

Jennifer,

I am definitely one that likes to try new things in the business.  If something doesn't work, its on to the next idea.  SOI is a place I am comfortable with and we have been trying to focus more and more on this as well as keep up our traditional methods.  It seems to be working!

Great reminders Jennifer. If you keep doing what you're doing, you're going to keep getting what you're getting! It's a cliche. But it's true.

Great post! I've been doing what I've been told. knock on doors, call people throughout the day, send postcards to a particular geographic area.  I see these as good methods to get business but I always felt you need to do what works best for you.  Maybe it's not letters, maybe emails,  Maybe not calls but face to face, and maybe not postcards but ecards.  There is something for everyone that we can use. Though which one works best for you.

Hi Jennifer... fantastic post!   So many people either insist things be done they way they've always been done or the way everyone else does it.  It not only is ineffective but to the target audience it is BORING.  People forget success is not mandatory!  Take care, Glenn

Love the doctor analogy, sometimes it's hard to figure out what's fun when one is worried about putting food on the table or paying the mortgage.  Therein lies the conundrum!!  Just Believe!

I've never been one for business as usual and I'm always trying something new and different to stand out in the crowd.  But, I am frustrated.  I've been in professional sales for 25 years and only working in real estate for a couple of them.  All the things that worked for me before don't work in real estate.  Once I was respected as an expert in my field and my clients knew that they could trust me to do what I said I would do.  My clients were very loyal and communicative.  I'm finding that as soon as I put Realtor on my business card I'm guilty until proven innocent in this business.  And loyalty, I don't see much of it in this business -- even after spending countless hours with a client.  I'm not sure how to break through this challenge, but I'm not a quitter and "failure is not an option."

The definition of insanity is repeating the same action over and over, expecting a different outcome.

Lots of 'insane' realtors around - so happy I'm not one of them!
