I wrote a post a couple of weeks ago about how being a member of ActiveRain had helped with my recruiting efforts as a broker:

How ActiveRain Has Helped with My Recruiting Efforts as a Broker

Last week, fellow AR member and newbie Christi Baylor joined our team.  She found me right here on AR, after (her words) she "stumbled across my blog".  She first contacted me on June 23rd, after reading this post of mine, which was essentially an open letter to new agents as I looked back over my 11-year career as an agent, and now as a broker:

A Message from a Real Estate Veteran to the Rookies

Christi was working with another local broker, but she felt that she needed more one-on-one training and mentoring.  We had a great interview/meeting, and she officially switched her license to Austin Texas Homes, LLC on July 2nd.  She has a great background in graphic design, and she still does some work for Mungo Creative.  Her husband works in new home sales for a local builder, so that should provide some great opportunities for her as well.

A couple of days ago, Christi wrote her first post on AR.  Please stop by her blog and greet her if you have a chance: http://activerain.com/blogs/ctbaylor

As I indicated previously, I am excited about the prospect of recruiting from among the membership here on ActiveRain, as I feel that those who "get it" with regard to blogging and social networking will likely be among the more successful agents around.

Thanks for reading!

Christi, first of all let me say congratulations to both you and Jason! You couldn't have found a better mentor and agency! Before I began my Real Estate Business I ran an advertising boutique in Dallas by the name of Show Works and understand the type of projects you have dealt with. This is totally different...

Christi, you have a lot of fun ahead of you. I can tell you that I (personally) have never done a mail out campaign. Ever. With the rate of return so low it doesn't justify my time. Think of yourself as a commodity. You are very valuable. Place a dollar amount on how much you want to make an hour and stick to what pays.

Network. As a project director you know you had to work with many different vendors. You were like the hub of the wheel (or the buck stops here) person. There may have been a dozen spokes to your wheel that you were in charge of designing, producing, and fulfilling. Real Estate is the very same way. All your spokes will revolve around your client. Whether or not the client is a Buyer or Seller or Investor, you will organize it in the very same fashion.

With Real Estate, the work does not stop till you have been handed your check. You will have to follow-up with your vendors in a timely basis. Different verse, same song.

Do not ever walk away from a person you meet without handing them a card. Be Proud that you're a Realtor. Even when the checker at the store says I don't need this...I leave it behind. This is the cheapest advertising you will utilize.

Work smart. Not hard. Gather leads by asking. Just ask...people are more than willing to tell you. "So, do you know of anyone that might be buying or selling Real Estate?" You'll be surprised...two out of five will hand you a lead.

Need I mention Internet Marketing? Duh... It's fantastic. Once you decide upon your specialization or area then go for it. Find your keyword terms to target (often times by researching the competition) and blog, blog, blog. Put out your site or whatever Jason requires...he's the boss...and jump in whether you sink or swim. You will learn how.

You, my dear are going to do great especially with the Broker of a lifetime! If you ever want any advice or just want to vent about your boss...just call!

Later in the rain~Deb

The fact that your new recruit is already familiar with AR means she already pays more attention to what is happening around her than most seasoned agents.  She will be a good one!  Good luck to you both!

Jason...

The exposure we get here at AR is unbelievable. I get calls EVERY day now thanks to my presence here. Congrats on your new team member ... I'll go by her blog and welcome her to AR!

Wow somebody does read your blogs besides me.  Isn't that scary that you are getting your message out.  Next you will be an active rain icon

07/09/2008 08:44 PM by Russ Ravary - Michigan Homes for sale - Michigan Real estate & Mortgage info (Remerica Hometown One)

LOL, read Russ' comment.   I thought Jason was an AR Icon already????   :-)   I've been hostess to a boat load of company since April and now I am FREE to read and write again!!!!!!  Nice to be back.

Christy is one lucky agent.  AR is full of brokers I'd love to work for, Jason being at the top of the list.

07/09/2008 10:23 PM by Natalie Langford, Winchester, VA Real Estate (Realty Direct of Shenandoah Valley)

It is exciting that people are able ot find us as a consequence of our activity on AR. A fellow KW realtor from another state found me because of AR when she searched for top KW agents in Miami.

07/09/2008 10:40 PM by Michael Sahlman e-PRO - Miami Beach Florida Real Estate (www.HomesForVIPs.com - Keller Williams Realty)

Jason, I think you have hit onto something.....why wouldn't agents want to gravitate towards a business that is ahead of the curve....when I talk of AR around here, it's as if I am talking in tongues! But when one agent gets it, it's the big Ah-Ha....works every time......smart brokers will slip this into their marketing.........thanks.

Jason & Christi, Congratulations to both of you!  :)  I read Christi's first post the other night and after reading had intended to suggest she contact Jason in a private email -- but got side tracked and didn't get to send the email.  Glad you found each other!

Christi, you made a wise choice -- if I were in Austin, I'd be working out of Jason's brokerage.  :)

Looking forward to seeing both of you in August. . .

I am blushing over here!  I have been out of town for the past 2 days and I come home to an email inbox that is exploding with comments, kudos and encouragement.  Thanks Jason for writing a whole blog about me.  Now I feel bad, my first blog should have been about Jason and Austin Texas Homes, but it wasn't...shame, shame on me.  I will have to write one this weekend.

Thanks to everyone else for the encouragement. I am very excited to be a REALTOR and I'm glad I have the opportunity to work with Jason at Austin Texas Homes.  I know that this was a move in the right direction for me because it is evident that Jason is a respected and knowledgable individual in the industry and I feel lucky to begin my career under his wing.  You guys ROCK and AR ROCKS!  Thanks again!

07/11/2008 01:34 PM by Christi Baylor (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

How cool is that!?  Congrats on the new agent.... but how are you going to keep her off the blog, and out there selling properties... haha.
