So, you say you don't want to be labeled a "tree-hugger"?  You've spent more than a little GAS on some gas-guzzling monstrosity in the name of vanity, or professionalism?  Maybe you just can't seem to find the TIME to recycle, or take the longer, slower forms of transportation?  Could it be that the time has come to review some of these assumptions?  You don't have to start your own garden, compost, or get on the waiting list to buy a Prius--here are some other suggestions to consider:

  • If you've never done the public transportation thing, start small by making short trips to common places like the post office or the grocery store, if they're close enough. This will help you get used to the system.  Even better--if they are close, RIDE A BIKE--double-duty, get your exercise too!  Here in Pinellas County, there are THIRTY MILES of bike trail connecting one end of the county to the other!
  • Reduce the number of plane trips you take. The environmental effect is more destructive than automobile trips, so for shorter trips, take a car instead--better yet:  ride share.
  • Use the bus. If you're more enthusiastic, then you can write to your city representative to request that your community upgrade their diesel buses to fleets of LNG or bio-diesel buses. Overall, this reduces CO2 emissions.  Or, do as Daryl Hannah, and convert YOUR car to bio-diesel!
  • Full-time student? Walk to school, or bike, jog, scooter, or skate. Most people generally live in the vicinity of their school no more than 2 miles away. You can do it!  Generations before you did it--just ask Grandma...
  • Telecommute when possible. If you can arrange to complete your work electronically, you'll reduce energy used in driving, or by however you get to work.

Not one of the Top Five, but a good way to check your 'footprint':  go to Native Energy and calculate your offset.

Just a few ideas--nothing to make anyone GREEN with envy...although, perhaps the BEST suggestion--if you are shopping for a home in the Tampa Bay area--TAKE THE FORECLOSURE BUS!!  Save money, save gas, save time by having your selections pre-screened!  Do it!  Sign up Today!

Loretta, You'd take your life in your hands going more then a short distance here with a bike if you're not staying on a path!  I wish we could ride our bikes, it's the perfect time of year and good for you!

Great ideas! Public transportation is really a joke here in So Cal but I would take it if it were feasible. I do work from my home office, so I have no commute. I think the slow economy has made many of us Realtors "reinvent" ourselves and how we do business. I know that it has made me very "creative" and conscious of where the dollars go.

Carole--it's not so great here, either, except for on the trail--we are fortunate to have alternative routes, and I'm hoping to see more people using them!

Deborah:  I remember how dismal public transport was in SoCal--San Francisco's is great, though!  Here, not so much, but there's still time to change things--the infrastructure in LA/Orange County is so linked to the highways, though, I know that it's difficult there.
