bull's eyeMy first experience with renting anything on my own was during my junior year at college. It was a small room on the 3rd floor of an old mansion.  I had access to a refrigerator with 15 or so other ladies and the thing actually had locks attached to it to prevent thievery of your food.  The room was clean and comfortable...a place to call my own.  Well, not quite.

A couple of years and one small apartment later, my new hubby and I moved into 'married student quarters' just outside the main University campus. I was thrilled to be able to have my own home.  Undaunted by the fact that we possessed a very limited amount of furniture, I determined to make the best of it.

The old tile floor had not been properly cared for.  We stopped by a flooring place to ask for advise and left with 3 large bottles of commercial cleaners and solvents.  I immediately went to work scraping off all the old wax that had built up over the years, then cleaning the floor before applying a new coat of wax.  The end result was a floor that gleamed so brightly, you could literally see your reflection in the shine.  No kidding!

But once again...it wasn't mine.  But when the building inspector checked us out of the unit before we moved  and told us that this was the 'best kept apartment' he had EVER inspected for final check-out, I simply beamed with pride and STILL didn't get it.  It wasn't mine.

It would take 2 more apartments over the next 6 years to summon the gumption to get a home of my own.  Luckily, we were still relatively young.  The purchase of that first home made me a landlord overnight and ended up being cheaper than renting.  In fact, my new home PAID ME to stay in it and the created a pool of CASH which we used to move up into our next home.

This story in a nutshell demonstrates why it is amost ALWAYS better to own property rather than rent.  Simply stated, it's about OPTIONS.  When you own something, you have the OPTION of benefiting directly and completely from your hard work.  In real estate, it's called EQUITY.  You also have the OPTION of selling your property for a profit or loss.  You have the OPTION of allowing someone else to live on your property and to collect the rent.  When you rent, your options/control are severely curtailed.

Well, truth be told...the world of virtual real estate is no different than the real worldIt's simply a matter of WHEN one wakes up to the reality that the space you occupy online is real and impacts your welfare, particularly if you are in business.  The truth is that one day very soon...your virtual brand address...that all important URL which defines the space you inhabit, will perhaps be MORE IMPORTANT than your bricks and mortar will ever be.

Here on the Active Rain network, we relish the kudos of comments and little yellow stars which create warm, happy moments.  But we would do well to not lose site of the facts.  Simply living in a space and taking care of it...decorating the walls and making friends with the neighbors does NOT constitute ownership, no matter how nice the landlord is.

Does this salient observation mean that renting is never appropriate.  Absolutely not.  Renting is something you do when the cost of ownership does not justify the investment of capital.  It can also be a very savvy business move.  Renting is also something you do when you are not prepared to assume the responsibility of owning something.  Because, make no mistake...ownership comes with it's own bag of hassles.

Renting in the virtual world means that you provide content to a FREE site which you give the power to do what it wants with your data. Renting in the virtual world means that rules and norms can change without notice or consideration.  The misnomer is the word FREE.  Because unless your time, intellect, imagination and effort has NO VALUE, you are paying.  Your  are paying a fee with your life energy, the most precious resource you possess.

When one understands this, the Value Proposition for participation on any network is evaluated in a different fashion.  For me, it became clear that having a small unit of my own which will increase in Value over time is prudent.  Yes, it's a hassle sometimes maintaining a couple of different virtual homes, but when all is said and done...there's nothing quite like a place of ones own.

Lola,  Absolutely, so beautifully put!!  And just such a nice way amongst all of the tumult.  I am well aware of this and that the landlord has just changed the agreement.  That's fine with me, I just didn't care for the way he went about it.  Thought he could have been more upfront, but then again that may have created a more difficult time for him.  What you stated in the end sums it all up - it's a hassle sometimes maintaining a couple of different virtual homes, but when all is said and done...there's nothing quite like a place of ones own.  So glad I had the foresight, just wish I had the SEO, but...

Marc...in time the SEO will come.  It's so easy to forget that the Active Rain Network was not built overnight.  In fact, I would take a safe bet and say that the founders spent many nights working out kinks.  It's not going to be easy, but to those who are willing to do what it takes, there will be rewards.  I'm glad you had the foresight too!

life energy

This morning I realized how much time and effort I've invested into ActiveRain. How emotional is that? To struggle to get to where I am here....and then try and make something out of my OWN stuff out there. You're totally right. Ownership by far outweighs the renting in terms of positive results in the long term.

I found out that in the end....I've invested not only time and effort...but emotions here as well. I thought that was what it was all about. Connecting with each other through our industry.

In time, my outside blogs will take off as well as my website has. There's still no place like 'my own home' so there is no fear of getting evicted if I can't pay the high costs of inflation in rent space.

Sally - I started with own blog before AR even came into being.  I came here, but didn't understand it at first.  Came back a couple of times and yes have invested a lot of emotions here as well.  That's why a lot of people are so very upset.  I'm sorry, but always wondered when the other shoe would drop & it did big time.  Jon just showed up on Twitter.  I asked him if they would revisit the pricing structure, but then we didn't hear from him after that.

Sorry for the intrusion Lola.  I just had to say something to Sally, because I could really feel her hurt in what she wrote.

Lola, I don't want to be a complainer but other than the risk in the future of renting AR I have been amazed how bad so often the systems run. You would probably never stand for this if you owned it. You would shut it down and move elsewhere. Yes, some days everything runs smooth. But other days you want to pull your hair out. Great thought on renting out here in the blogosphere. I guess we need to write down everyone's email address and web sites in case some day they turn out the lights and pull the plug.

Sally, it's a tricky thing isn't it...balancing business and new technologies with building relationships.  That's both the curse and blessing of Web 2.0 platforms.  I'm so grateful to have met people like yourself through Active Rain.  And those relationships will always occupy space in my heart.

However, agents and brokers need to take the time to really grasp the dynamics of online business.  Most of us are totally clueless.  The rest of us are just beginning to get it and learn how to make smart choices.  Steep learning curve.

Gary, thanks for your comment.  My intention is raise awareness of what our participation amounts to on virtual platforms.  Most agents and brokers barely have a clue about the back end of a website not to talk about managing the position of a URL online.

Is there any possibility that you along with all your wisdom would consider moving here to Virginia?  I just don't think I can justify a trip to Michigan for a couple of hours even though I am sure they will packed with helpful information.

Lola- I am going to be completely candid and transparent here. I totally understand and agree and you conveyed your message with such an easy analogy to understand and I believe this applies to most anyone here.

I am in quite a dilema. One thing, the main thing, like Sally said, the emotions and the relationships. That is the main reason we are here. I have made absolutely the best friends here that words can not even describe.

Next, I do not just blog for real estate listings here, I blog for my coaching practise too. And here I have a captive audience. I had a blog on my own, that I owned, for coaching agents, and it quite a lonely place:( I have gained many new clients to coach and my coaching fee is quite substantial. SO I am here for more than just one business unlike many other people who are just here for Real Estate.

IT is not often you can find a place to get business for both of my businesses in one place. I feel so many of my dreams that I have had since a small child are finally at my fingertips. I am finally finishing books that I have been writing, and going on to other projects that all were catapulted because of my activity on AR.

I thrive on recognition, kudos, points and carrots! I am honest, it works for me. That is the genius of AR. They know how to dangle that carrot.

I get 2 to 3 listings per week just from my AR blog. Not an outside blog, not my website, just the AR blog alone. I am afraid to take a chance to dilute those efforts and results. Will I spread myself too thin?

The SEO is great on AR, that holds me here too. But I won't be playing the pay and see who can take away my throne with their check book. Not on Localism anyways.

The next thing is I am a very loyal person and tend to stick good to those that treat me well. I feel like I am turning my back on what has brought me what I have today in so many areas by even raising my voice in discontentment. I would not be the #1 most subscribed to blogger in Florida if it were not for AR. I would not be the #5 most subscribed to blogger nationally if it were not for AR.

What a quandry!

Thank you for commenting on my post about the fee structure for Localism. Been there, done that! Doesn't work in google searches. Even Point 2 which has great SEO neighborhoods that they charge an arm and a leg for can not compete against my SEO on AR, not even Localism, just AR.

Rent has been free on AR, Rent is free on your outside AR blog.

You don't have to pay to be in top position it is still free.

Would you rather have been sold completely?  I still advocate giving it time. Katerina, your posts are up and when I type in Wellington, Florida you ARE the featured agent.

Yes there is some kinks with the neighborhoods, I'm sure it will work out.

All relationships have bumps, it only makes you grown closer and stronger to go through tough times.

No one has abandoned anyone, it has been a little over 24 hours.

Lola, I love your writing and grace !

Hey Lola,

Bottom line is I'd rather own than rent but it all depends on the situation you're in. I guess if you are fortunate then you can dictate the direction you want to go instead of making something happen in a situation that might never work for you...go with the flow and hope for the best.

Lola, this is the most graceful discussion of the current drama that I've read.  Many DO feel like the landlord changed the locks and without the required 30 days notice!  There was a lot of hype leading up to the launch and I was as excited as anyone else that there would be more focus on local communities and better information for the consumer.  Unfortunately, it opened with a splat instead of a bang.  I realize that there will always be kinks to be worked out, and I'm certainly not abadoning AR, but the decision to start my own blog with my own domain is looking smarter and smarter.

Sally, What is becoming clear to me is that ANY site which is not optimized and networked will not do well.  The reason your Active Rain site does well is because YOU put your efforts here.  It's about YOU.  There are thousands of AR sites which don't show up anywhere.  Always remember this.  Because you will always have YOU. :)

Perfect analogy Lola and you have the gift to communicate through writing, no doubt :)

I have always kept in the back of my mind that this site is a gift that someone else got and is sharing with me.  When someone shares with me I share back.

This site is not about one person, I have seen a lot of the "me factor" in the last day.  It is about close to one hundred members all over the country (and some from Canada) + the site founders.

I built communities and I built my individual web presence over which I have control.  I use most of my content within my own website which makes it one big huge blog on it's own.  I guess I rent and own :)

Katerina, Thanks for stopping by as I know that you were monitoring quite an intensive discussion on your blog too.  Your accomplishments have been impressive.  I know that I have enjoyed and learned from you as have many others.  But, like I noted in my comment to Sally...this has been about your effort.

Most of us knew nothing about SEO optimization prior to our linking up with AR.  I daresay that if the effort you put in here had been applied to your other coaching blog, your results would have been good as well.  This stuff takes time and tons of effort.  The reason why we do it is because it makes sense.

A landlord is in business to make a profit.  As long as that aligns with the needs of the renter all is well.  Active Rain needs people like you as much as you need it.  It's the process of clarifying the benefit model which is fraught with anxiety.

Hey Neal...that's pretty deep philosophy. :)  Going with the flow is great unless you're heading for the Rapids...then it can quickly become way more excitement than you bargained for.

Most of us here are in the realty business in one fashion or another.  It's our job to advise clients on investments in real estate.  Now, we must think about counseling ourselves about what makes sense with regards to our investment in the virtual world and social media.  It's definitely a conversation worth having.

Lisa..there's a saying that goes "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear."  Sometimes life's best teachers are circumstances which force us to re-evaluate our situation.  That's actually not a bad thing...in the larger scheme, it's often in our best interest to be challenged.

Renee...I sometimes say that my ego is my most expensive luxury!  It allows us to do our best work and then creates the most intense suffering in so many ways when it's perceived interests are thwarted.:(

When used correctly, Active Rain and other sites like it can do wonders for business and our web presence.

But the key is to understand that nothing is built without effort.  This applies to Active Rain and our own personal sites.  Depending on someone else to do the hard work and then hoping to reap all the benefits is a SURE lose proposition.  I too rent and own...because for right now, it makes sense.

11:00am • #32

Lola, what a great name!  One of my good friends in high school was named Lola.  First I want to say that I totally agree that it's better to own rather than rent.  I just want to put it out there that you have to crawl before you can walk.  I intend to buy my own home one day, but right now I'm not ready for all of that responsibility.  There's a lot that goes into owning a home.  If you're in an apartment and something breaks down, you just call maintenance and they come and fix it.  You don't have to cut grass or worry about an old tree of yours falling on your neighbor and them suing you.  You also don't have to pay property tax, sewer, etc. when you rent.

Once again, I do agree that home ownership is the best, just for some people it might not be the best thing for right now.

As far as the active rain analogy goes, I also had a blog on my own domain long before I ever heard of active rain and it just doesn't give me the same exposure that active rain does. I am a real estate virtual assistant so it just makes sense for me to be active here.  I get way more views and comments on my posts here than I do on my personal blog.  I still write in my personal blog, just not as often as I do here.

Great post! Keep up the good work.

WOW. I manage rentals and I didn't think of that analogy. Very well said.

I just posted to the Q&A thread that since most of the content for my town is mine, and since I won't pay to sponsor anything, and since I doubt that any of the barely active few others on AR in my town  probably won't either, that what it amounts to is that my town won't have community content up.

I'll put it up myself on a totally outside blog before I would pay to sponsor. Muy suggestion was to charge everybody a low fee to participate in Localism, and have the community static content put up wikipedia style, everybody who wants to contributes.

I am not particularly worried, as in this last to get on board, mid-west market, no one knows about Localism anyway and wont for a long time, imho. I was getting SEO before AR, in fact my website comes up lately before my AR posts, but I do value what AR has provided me free of charge this past year. The learning and friendships are as important as my marketing success. I don't think some people should be upset just yet with the new Localism, nothing has been set in stone yet. Thank you for a great story!

very well put. it has always been a mystery to me why we are willing to be unpaid "content" for everything from Realtor dot com to AR to you name it. we pay to be subscribers to local MLS's and THEY sell the listings and info to Realtor.com, who charges US to display the listings that they purchased from the guys who charge us to maintain them.

Teresa...Thanks for stopping by and Best Wishes on your blogging career!  With reference to your 'outside' blog...that term on Active Rain often simply refers to a blog which is not on the main Active Rain platform and which may or may not be owned by the blogger.

Since, you will likely need to have a hosting service to get your content online, ownership of the domain name is what is mainly being referenced as opposed to being a subdomain under a parent site.  Hope this is not too confusing.
