Sidebar Litter - Peugh!

No Littering

I have noticed a growing trend of adding “stuff” the ActiveRain blog sidebar. The tools, widgets, and banners we add to our blogs should add value to our blogs. It doesn’t matter if it is to promote outside activity, track visitors, or any other purpose for that matter. What we must avoid is a sloppy appearance, broken pages, or gratuitous distractions. Whatever your personal style is your sidebar serves an important function and we should not litter it.

Here are a few suggestions:

Remove broken widgets – I am often surprised how many blog have broken sidebars revealing little snippets of code. A broken webpage can hurt your credibility and may deter visitors from spending time on your blog. If it doesn’t work just remove it until it can be fixed.

Size does matter – There is a limited amount of usable width in the sidebar. I would not recommend going over 200 pixels wide for any widget. Just my opinion but it looks sloppy if it goes beyond the blog margins that are provided.

Center – Center alignment of sidebar looks cleaner then left alignment. Wrap your widgets in a div tag using the following code as an example:

<div align=”center”>Widget Code</div>

Space – Whitespace is often overlooked in design, but there is nothing worse than a overcrowded page. Wrap side bar code in a p tag:

<div align=”center”><p>Widget Code</p></div>

Don’t overdo it – Is the bobbing avatar really necessary? While it very well may be, carefully consider what to include in your sidebar and what can be taken out. Remember we want our readers to focus on the important messages in our blog.

What other sidebar tips can you share?

Well timed advice, I was looking for some ideas on exactly your suggestions for my sidebar....I plan on finishing it by this weekend. No doubt some folks simply overdue it.

I have an avatar that a couple of people don't like - but then several people have often written to me to say they think its great....can't win...I keep it because it fits my niche market for people with pets.

HELLO,

I agree that too much on your sidebar can make your page look sloppy.  I thing that you should make it your bare necessities.

Thanks for sharing!

This one is getting bookmarked.  Thanks!  Where exactly would the code go for the spacing or the center?  At the end of the widget code?

Hello IMNJ, This is very helpful advise and I know that so many well appreciate the advise and when taken will clean up many sidebars.

Leslie - Here is how it should look:

<div align=”center”><p>Place your Widget Code here</p></div>

The first tag is an opening tag - <div align="center">

The last tag closes - </div>

The sequence is important to be properly coded so that they are nested.

Sidebar code gets placed in the "Nlog Description" text box in "My Settings".

Howard,

I have also used <br>, sometimes added it twice to give space, in addition to <p>...</p>.

Another issue with many sidebar widgets or with some sidebar widgets is page load speed.

I have quite a bit of widgets, but some are so cool. Overload has crossed my mind. I wonder if the Localism blog will have the exact same widgets or if they will need to be added or selected separately.

I need to watch out to see which is the bobbing avatar you mention?

Another clean up need for some is missed typed HTML that shows up as plain text - when you want a widget, what you see is the code instead.

Thanks,

Howard

Thanks Howard,

Great reminder.  Clean and orgainized is always a better approach.  The blog, may be your only representation of your professional approach to work and your business.  Is it neat organized, logical, etc.  Widget craze is the latest and many people are convinced that more is better.  Just having one there makes you look "high tec".  I guess they do not think people will check to see if the widget works.  Good post.  KISS unless you know how to make it work.

My blog sidebar is a portrayal of my desk - cluttered, messy, unorganized, but I hope full of good content and helpful tools. :)

The thing I wish could be cleaned up is the very long list of keywords - if that were in a folder that could be opened when needed, the archives would be easier to get to.

I haven't had time to figure out how to use the sidebar.  As much I see it used it can't be too difficult

Sidebar widgets can significantly improve your blog in both content and promotion, the key is not to over do it.
