As promised, here is the first group of images that I'm making available to the Active Rain community to use as backgrounds with the new AR outside blogs.

These are just the first in a series of blog header graphics. In the coming weeks I'll be adding more images in various colors, textures and styles. If you have ideas, suggestions, requests... let me know and I'll keep them in mind when designing the next batch.

And YES, these images are FREE to use on your Active Rain blogs.

If you take a look at the graphics above you'll notice one thing they all have in common is space where text can easily be added.

If you don't have graphics software to add your own text, you can always upload any of these images to one of the many free online image editing sites like Picnik to add the text you want. Then save the image and upload it to your Active Rain outside blog.

For those of you who missed my short tutorial a few months ago about creating clean, easy to read blog headers, here are the highlights...

- to make your blog header text easy to read, make sure it contrasts with the background color or image

- for a light background, use dark text

- for a dark background, use light text

- for a medium background (i.e. grey), use a very dark or a very light text

If your text or logo doesn't have enough contrast with your background image/color, it will get washed out and will be very difficult to read. Here's an example of what not to do using the words "Can U Read This?"...

garaughty, blog design, graphics, wordpress

The color of text in the image above is too similar to the colors in the background so it gets lost and is very difficult to read. Not good!

When I have time, I'll be posting more images for Active Rain's outside blogs. Again if you have ideas, suggestions, requests... let me know and I'll keep them in mind when I design the next batch. Enjoy!

Kathy... great analogy, it definitely helps out people who need a little hand holding in the graphics dept. We all have our niches, I'm just happy this helped out a few people. Later K!

I made my own, however gif files won't run in outside blog header. I don't know why.

Richard... you'll have to check with the Rain foks, you might have to use a .jpg file instead.

Hello Marti!  You have wonderful Header's!  I am just wondering why I have uploaded my graphics in jpg form and saved it to outside Blog area...now I have not messed with the settings for using your own Domain because I am not interested in that right now...I just want my Blog to look like the Graphics I have added to my outside blog page.  I have been trying to understand how you are adding the Wall paper for this also...and I can not seem to find Step one Step two etc.  I found your blog about "calendar graphic pages" but, I have not clue where to upload the graphic so it appears as my background.

Sorry it this seems basic...I have done so much research trying to figure this out and now...I am starting to ask for help.

Thank you for your time...By the way, every time I do a search about this subject your Blog's come up.....SO, GREAT JOB!

Moriah... the outside blogs and the standard Rain blogs are 2 separate things. For your Rain blog you upload the background image thru the blog customizer available on your profile page (MyHome). You'll see an option to browse/upload a background image in there.

O.K. Marti, you've challenged me to get techy here.  Remember, I am like you trying to teach your mother or grandmother about all that tech "stuff" you're talking about.  I'm the one calling the IT dept and saying my computer is not working and they say turn it on. :)   So, wish me luck.

You are very kind and generous with sharing your knowledge and expertise.  Thank you!

OMG, MARTI you are the da bomb, take a look

A little tweaking here and there but that was fun.  I put it in my AR blog customizer thing, but I don't see it when I start a new blog????

Notice the time difference between this comment and the previous one......ta da.

ahhh, yeah, thanks but what's a header?

It took me 1 hour to do what you could have done in about 1 minute! ;)

Robyn- I get notifications on this Post and came here to see what you made.  I love that background, and your new Header (marti can tell you what it is LOL :) is beautiful.  You're right, marti could have done it quickly but then look at what you've learned now.  And everytime you see this you will know you made it :)  Good job.

marti- last time I came on here was a month ago....see I told you it was the gift that kept on giving :)

Robyn... nice, we all learn this stuff by trial and error. ;-)

Kathy... as always, you're right! ;-)

Thanks Kathy, I appreciate the vote of confidence.  It's definately trial and error, but every day I learn something amazing.  Funny thing is a lot of my friends think I'm the techy just because I do my own website.  LOL, LOL, Imagine that!  I love it.

Marti, well you are just so cool and with it and hip, such talent.  I'm still trying to find a picture for my header. Ya'all have me scared to just pull any picture from the internet so not quite sure what to do.  My favorite picture is from an old postcard but I don't think the size is right as it's more vertical than horizontal. So I keep looking.

Robyn- I am so happy to hear that you are scared to "just take one from the Internet" that means we've done our job of educating on plagiarism.  There are many places to get a picture, or for a small fee you can buy an image.  As for sizing, marti is tops :Oh, and I understand about friends thinking we're the techie ones.....boy how little they know of this stuff :)

Robyn... no problem, I started on your custom design, you don't have to have a picture, it's optional, send me what you have or wait and you might what I send you without any photos.

Kathy... they learn so fast! ;-)

Rebecca... you're totally welsome to use it but the AR blog dimensions have changed since the time I wrote this post so it won't fit very well. I'm going to try and do some new versions as soon as my schedule calms down but feel free to use these for now if you'd like.
