If you are in the market for one of the newest techy toys be sure to check out both Flips.Flip Ultra

Do you want the Flip Ultra Video Camcorder?  On amazon.com the prices range between $117.95 and $123.00 depending on the color you order.

Flip MinoThe Flip Mino Camcorder is priced at $145.54 on amazon.com.

It is the newer version, released June 2008.  It is very similar to the Ultra, simply smaller and lighter.

If you are an amazon.com customer you may well have free shipping when you order $25.00 or more.  You will receive your shipment in two days (not bad at all)

This is the only place I looked as I am always content with the service and prices I find there.  You may be able to do even better elsewhere but amazon.com is a great place to get an idea of a low price.

How will you know if you want the Flip Ultra or the Flip Mino?  Here is an abbreviated comparison of the two.

Flip Ultra Camcorder

  • Simple to use, pocket-sized camcorder with one-touch recording and digital zoom
  • Holds 60 minutes of full VGA-quality video on 2GB of built-in memory; no tapes or additional memory cards required
  • Convenient USB arm plugs directly into your computer for easy viewing and sharing
  • Built-in software lets you easily e-mail videos, upload to YouTube and AOL, and capture still photos from video
  • Watch videos instantly on TV with included cable
  • Dimensions:  1.2 x 2.2 x 4.2 inches
  • Weight: 12 ounces

Flip Mino Camcorder

  • Pocket-sized camcorder; Flat back panel with touch-sensitive buttons; 1.5-inch color LCD screen
  • 2 GB of on-board flash memory--records up to 60 minutes of video; 2x digital zoom
  • Internal Lithium-ion battery recharges when built-in USB arm is connected to a computer
  • Connects to TV for instant viewing
  • Built-in software lets you easily edit video files and upload them to video sharing sites
  • Height: 3.94 inches
  • Weight: 9.6 ounces
  • Width: 1.97 inches

You have two or three more color choices for the Flip Ultra.  The Mino comes in black or white.  I chose the white one.

Tracy Santrock has a great post that will help all of us with this new toy, Flip Video Mino - My new Techy Toy for the Gadget Gal(GG)

Since writing this post I did a little research (typical) and found an interesting article from PC World which may be helpful to any of you considering a purchase.  I wanted to check prices (why now, after I bought one???) and came across this review http://www.pcworld.com/article/146881/pure_digital_flip_mino_camcorder.html.

For the record, amazon.com had the best price according to what I saw.

Those that have been using their Flip camcorders have made some great videos.  Hope we all get proficient at using this newest tool to help us with our real estate business.  It is another tool that will enable us to do a better job for our sellers and buyers.

With the new Localism.com we will be able to show off our listings and our communities.  Buyers will be able to get an even better feel for what our areas have to offer.

Have fun!__________________________________________________________________________________________________

Kathleen, have you put your toe in the water yet?  I'm still holding out but who knows.

Kate, ok you have now become my techno-queen. Explain to me how a Flip video camcorder is different than "standard" VHS-C and other camcorders? Does it store to disk which you upload to the PC? I understand camcorders I just don't understand the Flip. I really do give a flip. How do you break up the 2 GB of memory, start/stop. I see you use the USB to transfer the file over.

So the apps software does all the interoperability stuff to create a YouTube video?

Man, I don't know which one to get. Smaller does not really mean a lot, but I like the idea of the recharging Mino.....decisions, decisions.........

VA is in the house. I definitely need a Flip Video Camcorder Kathleen. But I just brought a Canon Digital camera three weeks ago. But I need something to make videos that I can post online. Great post.

Kate, this is a wonderful toy. I've had mine since April - and it's a piece of cake to work. Great tool....;-)

Hi Marchel...Buying is easy for me.  That was a snap.  Let's see, I've had my Flip Mino for about 10 days and only took a tiny video of one of my sons.  He took me out for a three hour brunch on Saturday and I showed him my newest acquisition.

About time I really tried it out...how about on a listing?  Now that would make sense.

Kate......these little gagets have become so affordable and add volumns to our business.

Hi Gary...Any more questions like that and I will have to remove this post.  I think I led you on!Flip Mino

Here comes my very non-techie answer.  There is a little thing that goes into the USB port when you want to charge the camcorder.  It takes three hours using the computer or you can buy a charger and charge it in an outlet in two hours.

You are even able to connect this to your television.  The cables are provided.  Sounds pretty good.

There are some simple instructions included with photos and it also says you can click help inside the Flip Video Program, wherever that is, for detailed instructions.

OK.  I did find out that little thing is called the USB arm.

Are you taking back my title?

Kate (the Queen of all Non-Techies)

P.S.  As I was folding up the little instruction booklet I saw the site I'll definitely need, theflip.com/support.

07/09/2008 11:53 PM by Kathleen "Kate" Elim, LAKE ANNA, VA Real Estate (RE/MAX Lake & Country)

Hi David...I think the Flip Ultra does the same thing but check to be sure.  It has the USB arm and is definitely cheaper and if you don't care about size (they are almost identical anyway) you might just as well go with the Ultra.

Good luck.

Hi Lanre...I'm curious, what does 'VA is in the house' mean?

If you do feel that you need something for videos this might just be the answer for you.  They are about as inexpensive as you can get right now and I love the smallness.  I've only read good things about them from others here on the Rain that are using them.

I'll be interested in knowing if you decide to get one.

I read Tracys post, but I didn't catch the fact she got the mino. I should have paid more attention to the little thing. Sounds lovely, but as the proud owner of two of the others, I'll wait until they die. Wish I had known about the smaller one. Very cool !

Kate, I've now got 3 Flip Video cameras!  I didn't know about the Mino.  Looking forward to seeing some of your videos.

Sounds very cool. I will have to go check one of these out. Although my Casio digital camera takes pretty good video & sound already.

I'm really interested in purchasing one....I just need to do it!  :)  BTW, what is the "new localism" about?

07/10/2008 09:43 AM by Debi Ernst, Broker/Agent e-PRO (Ryco Realty Group)

Hi Missy...Tracy mentioned it in the title.  You are just fine with what you have.  The Mino is only a little more than 2 ounces lighter and slightly smaller.  The reason I got it is because it's out now but no one needs to update if the have the Ultra.

As they say, it is what you do with it and you a great job.  I have done nothing!!!

Kate

07/10/2008 10:20 AM by Kathleen "Kate" Elim, LAKE ANNA, VA Real Estate (RE/MAX Lake & Country)

Hi Brian...It really isn't any different.  Like everything else, it depends on the operator.  That's bad news in my case.

Why three?  I'm curious.  Is it because they run for 60 minutes and you do not want to be caught without a Flip?

Kate

07/10/2008 10:29 AM by Kathleen "Kate" Elim, LAKE ANNA, VA Real Estate (RE/MAX Lake & Country)

Hi Kevin...That's true, most of our digital cameras have very good video capabilities.  Why we are flipping out over the Flip is beyond me.  It really is small and even though I often have both cameras with me (a larger one and pocket size) this slips into my pocket very easily.

Hi Debi...I'm going to encourage you.  I think you really be happy with it.  Of courwe, I haven't really used it but it is neat and others seem to be doing a super job with it.

Kate

P.S.  The new localism...I've looked at it.  I like the look, however, there seem to be some clitches to be worked out.  I p osted something new to it yesterday and it still does ot appear.

07/10/2008 10:40 AM by Kathleen "Kate" Elim, LAKE ANNA, VA Real Estate (RE/MAX Lake & Country)

Hi Kate, the prices certainly are reasonable.  I used one of the price comparison sites to get mine!  Also, thanks for the mention too!

PS.  Try finding yourself or anything else on Localism.  I'm a bit disappointed.   Did you know they are going to charge a fee to be the featured agent in your area?

07/10/2008 12:34 PM by Tracy Santrock - Cary NC Real Estate Blog (Fonville Morisey)

Hi Tracy...Glad to mention your post.  That's how we all learn and promote one another as you well know.  Hopefully they will be encouraged to join your new group.

I still have to begin using my Flip.

Do you mind saying what you paid for yours and where you got it?  It might help others that are contemplating a purchase.  I thought amazon.com had very good prices but I didn't do a comparison.  So often when I have I end up back at amazon.com anyway.  I find the prices good, the service excellent, and the free shipping is an added value.

Ah, localism.com and the new fees for featuring.  That's going to be a hard pill to swallow after all this free time.  I suspect it was inevitable.

Kate, I have a little guy I'm bringing to the beach with me.  Should be fun!

07/10/2008 07:47 PM by Patricia Kennedy (Evers & Company)

Kate, I won one in the Active Rain 2008 Video Contest for 2008.  The second one was sent to me by Active Rain for the Makeover2Takeover Contest.  Unfortunately both of those malfunctioned and I recently sent them back to the company for repair/replacement.  I bought the third myself in the meantime so as not to be without one.

Regardless, having at least two is beneficial so my wife and I don't need to share.  She likes to use it too for her dance student clients.

07/10/2008 09:11 PM by Brian Block -- Northern Virginia & D.C. Real Estate (RE/MAX Allegiance)

Hi Pat...What beach?  I love the beach.  Well, I love the water period.

Have a great time, take plenty of videos and photos to share with us.

Hi Brian...Thanks for answering my question.  You took me by surprise.  I'm always asking in the comments and seldom getting answers.

I imagine it is just as addictive as the digital camera is.  I'm always taking photos even if no one else ever sees them.

I imagine it would be very useful for your wife.  It would be very helpful for students to see what they are doing right or wrong quickly.  Good idea.

I'm still in the dark ages when it comes to video, but I'm thinking about it.

Hi Kate - thanks for sharing about Amazon on these prices.  I have no idea which one would be best for me.  I'm a little leery of video, but only because I've never tried it and don't have a video camera.  I'm going to go check out Tracy's post, too.  Maybe your post will make me take the plunge...
