The entire country has recently been fascinated about the story of a 6 year old child who simply disappeared from a lower income neighborhood in Glynn County Georgia. Yesterday the body of the child was found due to the diligent work of the Glynn County Police Department, The Department of Natural Resources, Glynn County Fire Services and other community organizations and individuals who came together for the sole purpose of finding this child.
The perpetrator (s) have been arrested and the community awaits what will surely be a long and torturous pretrial and criminal prosecution. During the week that the nation watched the unfurling of this local tragedy I was truly amazed at the out pouring of support for the family and the authorities. Not only the expected and customary support from National Organizations but support on the person to person level. Not just support for the family but for the law enforcement folks along with the volunteers. Yes... that is right there were volunteers for the volunteers providing food, water, and all of the sundry necessities needed to conduct a 24 hour a day search.
Strangers from all socioeconomic levels came together for the singular purpose of finding the child. A very uplifting experience occurred throughout the area; for although we are truly a diverse area. An area with locations where the world class rich and famous come to escape. Which is supported by an infrastructure of good ole boys, red necks, techy and mid management types along with ethic common laborers and service providers. What I saw was something that may be uniquely American. For where else could one see in a time of crisis social position and needs were forgotten as total strangers came together in a single minded purpose.
Although the search has ended the community continues to offer its support and thanks to the family and those who gave freely of their time through holding a free Barbeque and gathering. Although the out come was tragic good was reflected by the actions of the many. Don't you just love small town America!
Michael, Amazing you found something good to write about in the face of horror. I read about the story of finding the child yesterday how very sad. This happened when Jessica Lunsford was kidnapped too, unfortunately she was found dead too.
It is a shame that this only happens during a tragic event such as the disappearnce of a child, or a natural disaster, but it does. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
