Less than 2 weeks ago I wrote a restaurant review post about Romano's Italian Restaurant in Essington, PA. I did it for several reasons. First, because the original stromboli they serve there is truly a taste bud treat. Saliva is filling my mouth as I type. Second, I wanted to illustrate to Julie Ferenzi how to use RealEstateShows.com to add value in local content. And third, I wanted to illustrate how this can help build solid relationships. I didn't do it to prove the SEO benefit of a blog post.
I sent the link to Pete Romano, the owner, and he loved it. He loved the post. He loved the Show. He said that he was practically brought to tears reading and watching. If I had been a real estate agent in his community doing this, I think the relationship part would be solidified! As complete strangers, we now had a bond. And it is a real bond. And I'm thankful for it.
As fate would have it, I was asked to fly back to Philadelphia just a few days after posting that review. I knew I was going to have 90 minutes free, so I told Pete I was going to stop by again and get another Stromboli. He was as excited as I was, it turned out. He wanted me to meet his father, his son, his aunts, his girlfriend. I was floored by it. And honored. My post was printed out on the wall by the cash register when I walked in.
Why I Carry A Camera With Me Everywhere
When I arrived, he took me into the back office and introduced me to his family and then we sat down to talk and eat. What transpired surprised me. He said something to his son, Danny, about his Google page rank that caught me off guard. I asked him to repeat himself and I quickly turned on my video camera. This is not award winning footage, but it's in the moment.
He had been hounding his webmasters for three months to improve his page rank. One ActiveRain post moved his site to number one for the search terms he had been checking every day. It was the first time that this had happened for him. The ActiveRain post was number two. He was shocked. In a good way.
He won't get those same results today. One post won't create lasting Google juice. But it clearly illustrates the power of blogging, both to position yourself on the internet and to establish relationships. The SEO benefit, in my opinion, is secondary. I don't even think about SEO. I don't blog for SEO. The primary benefit is building connections with real people. It's about helping others grow their businesses. Again, if I were a real estate agent in his community, I know I'd be the one getting referrals if he overheard someone thinking about buying or selling a home. There is no question in my mind! That one post may not create lasting Google juice, but it will create some lasting relationship juice.
The real juice is the relationship juice, not the Google juice. It's all about relationships.
If you're not connecting with local businesses in this way... start. The benefits for both of you are huge.

Such a great example Jeff! You forgot to mention you got a FREE stromboli, but we all know that is NOT why you did this! This is networking at it's finest, at it's best. Hey, his son is pretty cute too, what's his name?? wink wink!
WOW! Pretty darn amazing. Great way to demonstrate the power of blogging. I love stromboli...but I'm thinking I might just do my next blog about the superior service at the local Aston Martin dealership. How many colors does the V12 Vanquish come in anyway?
Hi Jeff, a friend of ours didn't even rank until we mentioned his name in one of Monika's posts Kewl Beans here on Active Rain. We showed him his ranking and how it got there and he was very impressed. He is a good writer and we sent him an invite to AR but they haven't joined yet. Keep up the good work.
Jeff, this is such a great example. I have been trying to get this across to the agents in our office and your post is going to help me do it.
Every time I take someone through the benefits of incorporating an activerain blog into their marketing efforts, I give them an example of Rich Jacobson. Rich has written a couple of posts about some local businesses in his market. These are businesses that have NO website. Well when you google them, guess what comes up.......yep, Rich's blog on ActiveRain, number one result.
Your blog hits on exactly what I am trying to get across to them. The most important part is the RELATIONSHIP you can build with that business owner. Most small businesses in towns across this country do not have the time, or money to get themselves any web exposure. Yet they still have potential clients that may try to find them there.
I guess I have to just keep driving it home to our agents, one of them is bound to figure it out.
Jeff, the implications of this post are phenomenal. What you did is great. The effect it is going to have on Julie is great. The effect it is going to have on all of the people/businesses who benefit from the efforts of those who see this post? Who knows?
Hey, Jeff! That post I did today on the coffee shop? Page one within hours. How cool is that? And I wrote more about them than anyone else, I have become the online authority about that coffee shop. And the tea shop over on Main. And the thrift shop. And ... well, pretty soon I could OWN this town. ;o)
Very cool. It helps rankings to have those connections - from blogs, or being quoted by journalists, or just being out there on the web. I think it's really wonderful that you got to meet these people and that your having mentioned them on this forum helped their rankings - at least for a little bit!
A couple of years ago I started www.HauntedRealEstate.com and it has caused a whole lot of interesting correspondence to come my way. Recently I wrote an article on the same topic in Real Town, blogged about it here on AR and I got a HUGE influx of emails from all over the country with the most amazing stories in them. I am continually astounded at the power of blogging!
Jeff- This is fascinating stuff.. I'm getting a lot of hits from local things I did using Real Estate Shows as tours.. I have five more I'm getting ready to put together and will add to my blog and websites.
More good ideas for using our R.E. Shows! I keep getting so many ideas that I wish I had more time to implement all the great ideas for using these shows! Thanks!
Hey Jeff-Thanks for the great info-Just goes to show the power of a well written and anchored Blog in the Right Place! Hopefully my website will start to move like that!
I was checking entry traffic to my ReesesPieces blog the other day. I use that term also on AR. I had written a Localism post last week with Maple syrup & eggs in the title. One of the visitors to my other blog had Googled "Reeses Pieces Eggs" - assumedly for Easter. I clicked on the entry link, and there was my Localism post as well as my personal blog - in #2 & #3 positions. Hershey's beat me out for #1. I think that's called the LONG TAIL of blogging! It's fantastic!!!
Thanks for sharing this story. I have a similar story that I experienced yesterday about how blogging creates lasting relationships.
(per your advice) I took the time to interview and speak with local business owners about their business and introduced them to blogging. To make a long story short, this person may or may not pursuit blogging, but from our discussion came several new ways to market her business in ways she had never considered. She was thrilled to have spent time with me to learn how blogging works and find new opportunities.
Blogging gave me something of value to give another business person who is genuinely grateful for my taking interest in her business. ----The start of a new relationship... :-)
Two words! I'm impressed! Ok...now the rest of the words. Great post, i have been witnessing this for the last two weeks. We just taught a blog 101 class to our association of realtors and they loved AR and the possibilities. This video clip will solidify their instincts and help them get on board and start enjoying the ride. Great job Jeff!
Jeff, thank you --great idea. I'm very new to AR and saw your post. I use RealEstateshows exclusively for my listings and I also created one for my town web site (the tour is on the real estate tab) take a quick tour of Trumbull. I hadn't thought about using it for a merchant and now I will certainly consider it. Love the product!!!
As much as I'd like to try, I can't respond to each of these individual comments. The time I spent in the office with Pete, his father and his son, was invaluable. It reinforced my belief that relationships are more important than anything. They can be formed in many ways, but they can't be discounted. Ever. SEO is nice. Relationships are better. They're not even in the same league.
and also it is probably another good use of RealEstateShows... highlight your local establishments and create your own video visitors guide...
I actually helped start a video streaming company YEARS ago... oddly once I started getting SEO on HERE, my 2 posts from those days re: streaming video started reappearing...
When I was working for that company, the options were limited, high speed bandwidth was a luxury, not the norm...
Today, people expect that type of tech... and why shouldn't we as realtors with access to YOU and your product take full advantage??
I keep my camera on me at all times as well but am finding that more and more people are avoiding me. I don't get it. :) Nice post Jeff I still say you are the best writer in the real estate blogging world. i can't wait for you to take your perspective and turn them in a book.
I just had dto write to say Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!! I just activated a trial subscription to your www.RealEstateShows.com and I created a great neighborhood profile in under 5 miunutes my first time out. I sent it to all my "professional" friends so they can get the next best thing since sliced bread.
I can't thank you enough for making a great product that's So Easy to Use and so Impactful.
I've subscribed to your blog because I know I can learn alot from you - I did have one little inconvenience - when I uploaded my profile picture it cropped the sides - I submitted a question to tech support so I'm sure we'll get ti working soon. Otherwise I'm Giddy in Clearwater - If you ever need testimonials - sign me up - you've got a raving fan!!!
well jeff, ...It's been quite a week...family is all excited....I believe...I personally sent your blog to at least 200 maybe 300 people....and looking for ways to send it to more...I think I am going too start collecting e mail addresses in a jar at the counter...make it a drawning...give away one free pizza every week for giving me the tag.....guess you have heard from some of my family...all of the keywords relating to stromboli..that I have used before without getting my site...are still #1 or in the top 3 or 4 behind your blogs...its like having the first 3 spots on the google search....question?....can I somehow...incorportate other family sites into a comment or....? to spread the juice?...I don't know what to say except thanks..it like alice through the looking glass ,..somebody turned all the lights on...you are just amazing...God bless....hope to talk to you soon...camera ready...set...bloog!
what am I thinking...might as well plug away....if anybody is interested....my sister Denise is a breeder of west highland terriers....she also makes special leather dog leashes...at www.deniseleashes.com.
This may be some of the best advice you've given. Connecting with local businesses by providing "free" advertising gives you a "free pass" to go back and see them, and start a relationship, and develop a referring party.
Jeff, this is a fantastic post. My entry into the blogging world has been so slow and a little awkward as I don't feel like a natural "writer". But this is something I know I can really do, and do well, and it looks like this is the stuff that matters. I have so many relationships already with local businesses, reccommend them all the time and now I can help them in this manner while helping myself too. I am also interested in your product and will be doing the trial soon.
This is a great post. I have started blogging about restaurants ans points of interest in my area and this is a great idea I never thought about making a realestate show out of it. Thanks for the tips.
Jeff, WOW! I am continually amazed at the ideas you put out there in regards to using your product!!!!!!!!! OUT-OF-THE-BOX! Do you think my former virtual tour provider gave me such ideas or was such a forward thinker in regards to "google juice"?
Jeff, how long will a link to an RES stay available? It was created for real estate listings which will (hopefully) sell, so I'm assuming they expire after a period of time?
How great is that! Congratulations on a job well done. Renee Burrows posts got me going with localism, I take my camera everywhere and I know the local establishments appreciate the extra notice. Thanks Jeff.
Sue.. we NEVER delete a Show. As long as your subscription is active, the Shows are active. Even if your subscription lapses, we don't delete accounts. After a time the assets would be archived, but never deleted.
What a smart way to prove how blogging can help not just the blogger but the subject being blogged about, just remarkable, and you surely have done it with such effectiveness. We really have to think outside of the box--we definitely can help a lot of deserving local establishments out there, and not really for the purpose of getting the exposure for ourselves, but to purely demonstrate the idea of helping one another, possibly even reciprocity, generosity, or to promote what localism is all about.
I was google searching about the fire bans to see if Fireworks would be allowed on Wednesday or send me to jailfor 60 days with a $500.00 fine (something serious to consider) LOL... and guess what, Active Rain came up in the search engine near the top! So that's where I went to check out the blog! LOL...
Another great article Jeff, I even went back to read your original post about Ramano's. I have a question, How do I use your product as a buyers agent? I can see its benefit for listings but I do not take listings, I am a Buyer's Agent. I am willing to bet you have at least a dozen ideas.
Jeff - A great example of how powerful AR can be. There are certainly lots of good uses for the real estate shows besides the standard house tour. It's good you are siting examples like these to spark peoples imagination.
Faina... that's going to be the case more times than not, since these other local businesses have potentiall unique names and they don't do any real Internet promotion. So your post is likely to be the only thing out there and they will certainly be thrilled.
That's funny - I had a Paia shop owner email me one day and asked me to blog about his shop - he said he wanted me to do what I did for (the other guy up the street) when I blogged about them. Apparently he had googled the other guy, and the same thing happened ... number 1 and number 2 spots. He wanted that too. So I did... but the magic wasn't there a 2nd time. Sometimes it happens, and other times it doesn't.
