For the hard-core trail runner or city marathoner-cum-weekend trail runner, "the Ridge," as locals call it, is a breath-takingly beautiful ankle-twisting, knee-wrenching challenging traverse across a mix of of limestone, sandstone, volcanics, shale, and conglomerates. The brutal, almost 20 miles long, race, begun by Ed Anacker in 1985, offers 6800' of ascent and 9500' of descent, all the while forcing you to scramble over knife edge rocks and baby-head boulders.
