Community

Over 500,000 residents call Anne Arundel County home. Rural

Anne Arundel County covers approximately 267,230 land acres. Thirty percent (30%) or 80,169 acres are currently zoned agricultural. Large and small enclaves of agricultural lands are located in the southwest portion of the county. Although the amount of farmland in the county has continued to decline, the county has recently revised its farm and woodland preservation program in order to encourage agricultural activity and preservation of farmland. Currently there are approximately 9,400 acres under permanent protective easement through the county's local program. In addition, Anne Arundel County has zoned approximately 33,000 acres as open space, primarily consisting of county parkland or wetlands area, while the state and federal governments own approximately 12,000 acres.

The county´s Comprehensive Plan and Land Preservation and Recreation Plan recommend the creation of greenways throughout the county, especially as alternative transportation routes between growth areas and connectors between trail systems. The county has the framework for an excellent greenways network. The county manages approximately 42 miles of bicycle and nature trails. The Baltimore & Annapolis Trail provides a 13.3-mile long, 66-foot wide greenway extending south from Glen Burnie to Annapolis. The Patuxent River watershed and the Patapsco River Valley are two of the county´s most sensitive greenways.

The Anne Arundel County Public School system provides a challenging and rewarding educational experience for every child.

Anne Arundel County has ready access to the cultural and education alopportunities offered by the cities of Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and is home to the state capitol, Annapolis, which has a rich, historical past. This rich history is closely linked to its location on the magnificent Chesapeake Bay which affords many opporunities for exploration of the natural world.

The AACPS school system is the 5th largest in Maryland, and among the 50 largest school systems in the country. AACPS boasts 8 National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence, and 11 Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence, exemplifying the administration and community´s commitment for educational excellence.

In addition to the excellent public education that the county offers, Anne Arundel County is also home to a number of private schools. This diversity of educational opportunities gives residence of the county great options when making crucial educational choices.

Recreation & Leisure

History, Music, The Arts. Anne Arundel County Has It all.

With over 534 miles of coastline, Anne Arundel County is known for boating, fishing, crabbing, water skiing, sailing and swimming. But that's just the beginning. For nature lovers, there are two state parks, over 70 county parks, and several nature preserves. We also have numerous greenways, including the 13-mile Baltimore and Annapolis Trail where walkers, runners, bicyclists and equestrians pass sunny mornings and afternoons. The wide variety of recreational programs in the County appeal to all ages; from dance, gymnastics, and fine arts to fitness, fun camps, and wilderness challenges for youth and teens. With Ravens football and Orioles baseball home games a short drive away, you can be sure to be part of the action when these championship teams compete. And on the first Sunday in May you can participate in the annual Bay Bridge Walk, where thousands of residents participate in a 4-mile hike across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

The highly acclaimed Annapolis Symphony performs throughout the year at its home in Maryland Hall. Leading jazz artists appear regularly in downtown Annapolis and in venues throughout the county. And outdoor country concerts during summer months feature some of the industrie's finest. In addition, there are countless museums, theatres and galleries in the county. Sneak a peak at the National Cryptologic Museum, a collection of exhibits highlighting the history of espionage and code breaking at the National Security Agency. Or tour the beautifully maintained historical homes and cobblestone streets of Annapolis. There you can visit the Maryland State House where General George Washington resigned his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in December of 1783 and where Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe presided over the Continental Congress from 1783 to 1784.
