When we bought our little one bedroom townhouse in March of 2005 at the Royal Palm @ Waipio Gentry the first thing we did was submit a request to the Board Members of our Association.

You see, Condo/Townhouse Associations have rules and if it's one thing you do need approval for is a structural revision to your unit amongst many other things. So make sure you read your house rules and association documents regarding remodeling and so forth.

We were adamant that we wanted to get new and improved secure windows and a new sliding door for our ground floor unit. We went to the showroom of Coastal Windows down the street from our complex in the Waipio Gentry Business Park. We immediately knew that this was the place we were going with so we scheduled for the estimator to come to our home, take measurements and then fax over the estimate.

We then submitted the request to our Association along with the estimate and sketches from Coastal Windows detailing the windows and sliding door down to the grids to match all the rest of the community. Anything that is visible from outside of the building has to match accordingly with everyone else. The only difference would be that OURS WAS GOING TO BE NICER.  We are still the first and only ones to do this in our community but we paved the way for others...should they decide they want to spend the money.

Coastal Windows are independently tested, commercially rated and are the only brand of vinyl windows approved by the City and County of Honolulu Building Department for use in high-rise buildings. Of course our units are not high rise buildings but our unit has the only security type vinyl windows and door installed in our complex.

The vinyl windows and doors make it almost noiseless when sliding-compared to those old rolling aluminum roaring doors of yesteryear. The windows and door cannot be lifted off the track and where the windows and door locks are, they fit past the edge so you can't slide anything between to break the locks.

And the most important thing is.....easy to clean vinyl!

Sally, those are gorgeous doors!! I didn't know they made sliding doors that were secure. I used to live in fear of mine whenever I was single and renting. They're beautiful! You trailblazer!

Linda: I love my windows and doors! For one thing there's a soft swish...no railroad sounding doors and windows here! Not only that but my old windows were all one piece of aluminum. Mine now have top and bottom sliders and there is moulding around the windows and door as well.

Hi Sally,

Nice aesthetic improvement not to mention the additional security. I assume that the board gave you immediate approval for the project.

Sally, Good Feng Shui principle...let the OUTSIDE IN.  I love sunlight and would love these doors that give so much of it...not to mention the added security.

Sally, I have to replace the sliding doors that lead to my deck and need to shop around for something that I like.  Now that I see yours in the picture above I think that something like them would also look good in my house.  Thanks for the idea.

Sally - I had vinyl windows on a room addition years ago and remember that I could not use any regular window cleaner on them or it would take off the sun protective coating - have they taken care of that problem with the new windows or do you need to use a special cleaner!!!!!
