You've got to hand it to Benjamin Franklin. When it came to adages he gave us all something to think about. I don't know if it was Ben who coined the term "out of sight...out of mind," but it's something that should be in the back of every real estate agent's mind.
Being well known by the office gang, a few friends and family is not enough to become successful in real estate. Neither is the occasional referral from past clients.
Have you ever noticed the agents who are most successful are those whose names are household words in their community? Real estate agents living in small communities such as Cambridge, Nebraska (pop. 1050) are instantly recognized on the street. The task of recognition becomes more difficult the larger the community. That being said, it can be done and in a way that doesn't require re-mortgaging the family home. There's no time like the present to get begin.
Start in a small way. Concentrate initially on the two square miles around your home. Get to know your neighbors and let them know you. Ask those you meet to mention your name to their friends. Hand out business cards freely with something personal hand written on the back. People tend to hang onto cards with hand written notes longer. They call this "viral marketing." You tell two friends....they tell two friends etc. etc..
Here are a few more tips that may help along the path to branding your most important asset......your good name.
- Write articles for your local community newspaper, newsletters...or blog online. Be sure to put your website address in the byline. Promote your articles in your website.
- Establish yourself as a known real estate expert. Introduce yourself to the media for interview comments. Send them a press kit containing a short bio of yourself and your full contact information.
- Seek out after dinner speaking opportunities with local service clubs. Make yourself know and available to them. Have two or three speeches ready at all times. Practice, practice, practice to become polished in your speaking presentation.
- Get involved in your community through sports, charities, service clubs etc.. As an example, become the spokesperson for your organization of choice. As you promote your community affiliation, you'll be promoting yourself. Once your community good deeds are known....have someone suggest your name in a community awards competition.
- Promote your educational accomplishments, community involvement, certificates and awards.
- Include a small photo of yourself as part of your email signature along with full contact information....and perhaps a brief slogan.
- Reward and recognize clients after a sale is made. Stay in contact with former clients by remebering birthdays, anniversaries etc..
- Ask permission to use clinet names as endorsements.
- 80% of home buyers consult the internet before making a purchase. Promote your website!
www.TailGateTags.com makes small, tasteful, inexpensive advertising nameplates for automobiles. Having one or two of these on your car is an absolute must to get your name and contact information seen hundreds to thousands of times everyday for years. An extremely good investment.
Self promotion is not a one time event. It never ends. Make a written game plan and follow through everyday.
The trick to remember while you're using all these tips is that although it may cost you time and money, building yourself a good name is priceless in this business!
