U-Haul's #1 Destination City is in CA... A Beach City?

I was listening to my favorite afternoon radio talk show yesterday.. John & Ken on KFI.  They were talking about an article in the LATimes about why residents in other states disliked Californians who moved into their states and changed things.  One of the biggies was how California transplants have influenced NO SMOKING laws in many states.  The other reason they are not happy about Californians moving into their areas is because they think we are responsible for higher real estate prices.  In some respects this is true... but there are simply not that many people from CA moving to every city in the United States to blame us for all rising real estate values. It may be convenient to blame us for everything that you don't like in your state but be reasonable we really aren't everywhere.

That's why I found this article from U-Haul about the #1 Destination City in the US so interesting.  You can make fun of California.  You can  call us the Land of the Fruits and Nuts.  You can laugh about our obsession with Hollywood.   You can joke about earthquakes and call us shaky acres.  You can blog about what will happen when the California real estate market crash dives.  You can blame us when you don't get lung cancer.  You can be mad when the value of your home rises.   But you can't dispute U-Haul  and for the year 2006 Los Angeles CA was the #1 Destination City in the United States.   In fact  California had 8 cities  out of the the top 50  listed by U-Haul.  The next closest state was Texas with 5 cities, Virginia with 4 cities  and Florida with 3 cities.

When people use the term Los Angeles they are usually referring to an area not downtown Los Angeles.  Now I can't prove this but I'm sure the South Bay Beach Cities... Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and El Segundo had a number of those new arrivals buy homes in our area.

I am speculating that this is true because we are seeing a lot of activity in our little beach towns.  Inventory is down and property is selling.  While prices are still lower then in the boom years they are inching up a bit from 2006.

I know I'm prejudiced but it's easy to understand why people want to move to The South Bay. We have everything... beautiful beaches, great restaurants, lots of recreational activities, theatres and perfect year round weather.  Yes, our real estate is expensive but we believe this beautiful setting and great lifestyle is worth the price.

If you are curious about what we have to offer... take a tour of each of our charming Beach Cities... Click the city name to take a stroll through town...  You will  understand why people want to move here...

Those are nice presentations of your four cities.  What is the cost to make a presentation like that?

Great post, Kaye. Some interesting facts. There was an article the other day in our paper claiming that our county lost about 42,000 folks. Not sure about that...there are certainly some towns here that are growing. Love your tours!

Jeff

Kaye, great article and very effective use of the real estate home shows. Manhattan beach is certainly lovely, though I was only fortunate to visit briefly I certainly see the appeal.

In fairness to the integrity of the statistic, there may be a few reasons for this:

U-haul is primarily a West Coast company (based in Phoenix) do their stats will be biased towards a West Coast City.  Budget or Penske might display a different "top city".

California has the most cities on the "top moved to" list because of our sheer size.

OK, that being said.  I'll bet my last nickel that if you surveyed most Americans and asked them where there dream place to live in the US would be, Southern California would be in the top three if not #1.    There really is no place better than Southern California that represents the American Dream gone right.

Brian- You are probably right.. I had forgotten that U-Haul was west coast based... And you absolutelu correct.... there is simply no place like Southern California..

Loved your new posting...I'm a native, and the tour was another entertaining overview. The beach was just the place to be when I was a kid. Now I'm sure of that, with  a slightly different perspective. It costs one helluva'lot more. Thanks, Bob

Hi Kaye,

I tried Real Estate Showcase.  Actually I am on a 14 day trial.  That is a nice way to introduce the system and they did not ask for credit card information.

Here is my first presentation on Huntington Beach.  Let me know what you think.  Thanks for the tip.

Kaye,

I love the tours. I've worked in Manhattan Beach and now in Hermosa for the past two years. I can't see myself working anywhere else. Although I live in Los Angeles, I am tempted to move by the beach. I find myself wanting to work weekends, just so that I can stay in the city with my family for an afternoon full of fun. There is nothing like taking a lunch break at the park or right by the sea. Its my way of relaxing. I love the cities!

Luisa- Thank you but Jeff Turner's Real Estate Shows get all the credit

Gena- You are right.. this is what people don't understand about So. CA and these little beach towns along the coast.. we don't worry about subprime lenders or markets crashing because we operate from a different economic base.. doesn't mean we won't have problems and see prices decline or even some foreclosures..
