Rachel Oswald, reporter for the Covington News, wrote an article in today's edition about irregularities in the campaign of one of our candidates for chairman of the Newton County Board of Commissioners.
In her article, Oswald alleges that Democratic candidate Hubert White, a prominent developer in Newton County has been issued numerous citations for violation of the County's Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Ordinance (for which he hasn't paid his fines), that he switched parties to run for Commission Chair but still donates to the Republican Party, and that, since quakifying as a Democrat, White has "campaigned hard for the votes of newcomers to the county, particularly the votes of black residents," according to Oswald. He has even garnered the endorsements of former county NAACP presidents Archie Shepherd and Rev. Harold Cobb.
But it seems to me that White might as well have gotten endorsements from Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton because when Shepherd was questioned about his endorsement, here's what he said...
"I've known him for a long time," Shepherd said. "He has to reach out to the new people because some of the older people, that's been around here, won't vote for him."
Well, with a ringing endorsement like that, I don't think White's opponents have too much to worry about. It seems to me that in this election, Hubert White's toughest opponent is.... Hubert White!
Don't forget to vote this coming Tuesday. It's important to our County and to our future.
