I'm not just a Realtor®, I'm a real person with a hectic life, kids and many other interests besides real estate. I absolutely love the area of the country in which I choose to live and want to promote it as an affordable and wonderful place to raise a family. When I have the chance to blog I write about my life, my interests and my family too. Now I know that some may feel the private side of real estate agents lives are best left for facebook, but I'm just too transparent to keep my lives separate.

Since I've been posting on Activerain, and focusing on Localism especially, I've received countless calls from people who've found me online. In fact, I've had several calls from people wanting information on festivals, schedules, how to contact a POA, thinking I work with the business I've profiled on Localism! If they'll hold on a sec, I'll get the info for them.

So I wasn't surprised to receive a call from an agent in Iowa who had a client moving to Lynchburg. Would I want a buyer referral? Yes sir, I sure would! Apparently, the client, who's Scottish, saw my Activerain profile. (Or my website, or a localism post, seriously, I've had so many contacts, I've stopped asking, I've got such a high google ranking thanks to Activerain).  I mention my family which includes my dog, Duncan. (I figure if my good friend Danny Thornton can blog about his five dogs, I'm good with my one)! Duncan is a West Highland White Terrier who runs my family. The breed is of Scottish decent.

There are 800 realtors in Lynchburg and the buyer chose me because of my dog! And I'm okay with that!!!

Yes, That is a Houndstooth Coat

I contacted the buyer and he was just charming, though with my Boston accent and my Virginia ear, I have to listen really hard to understand what he's saying. Since their home in Iowa had just been listed, the couple wanted to rent prior to buying. What luck, we happen to own rental property. I was able to work something out with a tenant who was going to move out at the end of July. The Iowa referral will be able to move in Monday and stay until their home sells!

They arrived yesterday and will only need to spend a few nights in a hotel. Our current tenant didn't have a problem with letting the new tenant unload their U-Haul into the garage. That's just how people are in my neck of the woods. The new tenants are like us and had way MORE furniture than would fit into the rental garage so one of my garage stalls is filled to the ceiling with their furniture too! (I am a multi-service Realtor ®! LOL)!

Does Activerain work? Is blogging worth your time? Here it is in a nutshell: I had my website for a year before I joined Activerain and I wasn't getting hits like I am now. If it weren't for Activerain, I wouldn't be showing up on google. If it wasn't for Duncan, the client may have gone with another agent.

By the way, Duncan got a referral fee; a treat and a new toy.

If you know of anyone relocating to the Lynchburg, Virginia area, have him or her give me a call. I will do all that I can to help make the transition as smooth as possible.

Debbie, I have to agree with you.  I haven't been on AR very long, but there are those people who post things about their personal lives, or about things that are important to them, and by doing so, it allows us to get to know them better.  People like to do business with those they know and like and feel comfortable with.

I've seen a handful of people complaining about how personal this place is becoming, they only want to see business blog posting.  While I agree that posting about business matters is very important, I also think it is important to put our cards on the table and let others get to know us.  Different people connect to different personalities as well as Professionlism.  I like the balance I am seeing, and the ability to get to know others both personally and professionally.  And since I like your personal touch, I'll hit that subscribe button!

By the way, you are only an hour from my hometown...Charlottesville!  I drive through Lynchburg when I go home!  Spring and Fall are such beautiful times of the year for color in central Va.

Greg, thanks for your input. I want to do business with people I 'know' and one way to get to know each other is through blogging and this is a great forum for us! Let me know when you'll be in the Lynchburg area again!

I too do personal postings on AR. I think we should use this great site as benefits us and our business individually. I am not just my business and I think that much of who I am could be one of the things that draws new clients. As you said, people find you and use your services for all sorts of reasons; I'd rather have more reasons than less! BTW, cute dog!

I've gotten inquiries because of my dogs as well....People love and trust animals - perhaps more than people.  Now if I can just get Jade, Tundra and Buddy to do my open houses.....

Hi Debbie! What a great post, honestly! I am huge on making personal connections with people! My dogs are such an important part of my life, that they come up pretty early in conversations with clients and potential clients, and they're mentioned in my profile. I haven't blogged about them yet -- but I could and will! Oh, the stories I could tell -- LOL I haven't got a referral or client inquiry yet "because" of my dogs -- can't wait for that to happen! They are adorable, I must say. As is your Duncan :-D

It is the strangest things that get a client to hire us, I remember writing about Elvis and it got me a client as well as wearing my Elvis socks once. I don't know what it is, but you have to love the King when he brings you business 30 years after his death.

I'm glad your story about your dog got you business am I'm guessing it was because you were writing from the heart and it hit a cord with that client.

So many people to me (including agents) have said: "using your dog is just not professional"

I bet to differ and you have proven it here! It isn't about the professionalism (which should be done with or with out pets) it is about connecting. Are the pets not an extension and sometimes a true member of the family?

Good for you! thanks for the post!

Hi Charlene, for a long time I didn't post about my kids or family but I've found it allows the public know more about the person they're dealing with. My dog is such a large part of our lives so it seems natural to talk about him. Thanks for stopping by!

Good news and way to go Duncan! Now I just have to go write about my dog or she will get a complex knowing that other agents think enough of their dogs to write about them AND pay a referral in treats! She is going to be really mad, so let me go and write about my baby Bexley!

Who wouldn't love Duncan in that little sweater?!

I firmly belive that clients pick their agents for more than our ability to sell/help them buy - they pick someone with whom they identify so blogging about personal things is critical.

Jessica, it's all about that dog now! You're so right- clients want to know something about the agent they're hiring. We spend a lot of time with together. Thanks for stopping by.
