I adore Ian Watt, and liked his style even before he started doing his video blogs.  Now that he has the videos going, he is even more awesome!

Everyone can learn a lot from watching Ian's daily video blogs.

1) They are short

2) He has charm and personality and a great twinkle in his eye

3) He says what he means and he means what he says

4) He ALWAYS ends his videos the same...almost always.  Creates a feeling of familiarity.

I really like his style.  I'm going to try to embed a few here, but you can catch all of his videas at

P.S.  He makes it look SO EASY, doesn't he?  He just has a Flip Video in the cup holder of his car.

Wow, I had not thought about the cup holder. When I was working on video for the AR relocation contest, I almost hit a police car in a turn lane trying to drive, shoot video and talk at the same time :) I am going to have to try my cupholder in the morning! The videos are really cool and I'm headed off to catch a few more.

>>>He just has a Flip Video in the cup holder of his car. Even though it's in the cup holder, I find myself worrying that he may not be paying close attention to traffic on the road. I think the treadmill idea is a bit safer. :-)

Ardell, did you see the one on his site about how to get your mail?  That may be a favorite of mine.  Thanks for pointing Ian out, I agree he is doing this well.

I like that...........    I was doing that to get confortable in front of the camera .. shooting myself while driving and he might be on to something.  I go back and look and those were probably the most natural conversations...  hmmm no i am thinking

See YOU soon!

Steve,

Yes!  We ran into Ian recently at a video presentation over at Zillow and they played that one as one of the examples of his stuff.  There's one about lockboxes that ticked agents off.

GaryVee, The Wine Guy, (Gary Vaynerchuk) was actually the guest speaker, but I got more inspiration from Ian.  GaryVee is hugely poplular and is a great lesson in Transparency as well.  But he's a speaker now, pretty much, as a career.  I'm more inspired by Ian.

He'll be at Inman if anyone wants to meet him that is going.  I don't think he's one of the speakers.  He's usually hanging out around Steve Jagger of Ubertor.  Though I expect Kevin and Kim and I will be swooping him into our travels if we can, at least for the first day or so when we will be there.

I'm going to try to get a few videos up before then.

Ardell -- Thanks for introducing me to Ian. . .great videos. I am afraid I would crash and die if I tried something like that! Love the concept, just need a safer venue.

Lori,

One of the items we discussed at the video roundtable was that Ian should not look into the camera at all, as he was getting complaints that he might hit something.  What a video that would make!  And there is some suspense in watchin "an accident waiting to happen".  I love seeing the movement in the background though.

In his later videos you will see that he will likely not be look into the camera, unless he is stopped or pulled over.  That was one of the feedback issues of the meeting.

I love the fact he is in his car when he is doing these. His voice is perfect for video. I also agree with you about the 'short and to the point.' I could learn a lot from that alone lol

I love that he is just "talking" to us.  All agree that anyone who really knows their stuff and doesn't have to "prepare" comes off as someone who really can be helpful to you in a real estate transaction.

Off the cuff vs. prepared speech is definitely the way to go.  Even if you prepare it, you don't want to look like you did.

ARDELL, I like this guy! I have done some videos while driving and posted the one where I went the wrong way - had to ask the road worker if I had to get on the ferry and had to end my video because the police stand right by the road I was having to detour on !! lol!! I just held mine in my hand. I am trying to figure out a tripod method. Thanks for sharing I am going to go and find more of his stuff. Oh and yes I said "oh crap" when I made the wrong turn. Going to release it to the public if I figure out how to write something - for now members only :)

I just got a message from Ian (yes, he was driving) and he's going to pop in and answer any questions we may have.

Ian, did it take you long to decide on this "standard" style?  I know you have a few that are not you driving around, but did you make many videos before deciding on this style?

What steps took you to this point?

Pull over before you answer :)

Jo,

Get out of the idea of "members only" posts.  It's not about US and THEM anymore...really.

I think it's time for AR to shut down "members only".  Clearly just about anyone can become "a member" and it gives a false sense of privacy.

Oh, ARDELL, I totally agree. I am so planning on putting it out there. I just hadn't had time to write the blog and thought it too funny - I guess it was like a pm to my friends that I am such a goon somtimes. :)

Yes some people say that driving and blogging is not safe but the way I look at it, its just like Hands Free cell phone talking.... I even made a safety first video for those who are concerned. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JteeB49Lls Have a great day! Ian

Just as long as you are not texting it should be okay lol. Do you have to be on a residential street to have this work out? I'm thinking highway noise could interfere with the sound quality am I wrong?

Ardell, I enjoyed seeing Ian's videos and he does have a very natural way about him.  I'm a bit concerned as others are about his driving and filming at the same time.  I did one driving video of a community that I posted here a few months back -- not sure I'll do that again...  I've got a mini-tripod that I can use to place the Flip up on a flat spot on the dashboard, but trying to concentrate on the road as well as film, talk, etc. at the same time may not be the smartest option.

I just clicked a few links and said the server was down.  Everywohere on Ians blog where a vido was is a huge blank white spot....so that could be an issue.  If we only have a video without text, and there are issues with the main Company....heck you will have a blog of nothing.

I know that's not real optimistic, but hey I tried, and since I don't know Ian, what reason would i have to go back again?

I have not had that experiene Kathy, but just like Localism or anything else people are trying that is new, there are always pros and cons and hiccups.

As to giving up easily, that's an individual preference.

He does get that comment, Brian.  That's why I'm going to try the treadmill :)  Though I almost always am in ponytail mode and a bit out of breath.  Might not work, but I'm going to try it out.  I have to be at the gym when few people are there, though 1-2 minutes of talking should disrupt people too much, I don't think I'd do it if there were a lot of people in the room.

Thank you for all the comments. I love this technology, its just amazing how fast we can learn from one another. I have been tied up with opens and showings and now I have to run out to a function but I wish I were around all day to jump in to these conversations. Cant wait to see the treadmill....

Have a great day!

Ian

Ardell- giving up easily...ummm as I stated I don't know Ian.  Just like a consumer if they don't know us they move on to get the info they want.  They don't care about technology hiccups....Ok, but once they know something about the person they will give it another try....

The example is I am back here to see if it works....but because of YOU.  And to me that is realistic, not giving up easily....

And for whatever reasons the Video's are all showing now.....:)  Now I will go check them out.

Ardell - THanks for these, it gives me some great ideas about videos. I can't use my cuphoder like he did because it's in my consold, and it would look really strange. But I can so something similar. Thanks again.
