Mural across from Farmers market

I made my first visit this year to the Ann Arbor Farmers Market. I enjoy going, it is a happy place. Today I took my camera and when I took a photo of some fruits and vegetables, I gave them my business card and told them to read my blog.

Michigan Cherrys from Kipnick OrchardThe Ann Arbor Farmers Market is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the growing season and features locally grown crops, flowers, herbs and plants. There is also different artists that sell their art work when it is open.Herbs at Ann Arbor farmers market

Today I ran down and got some fresh corn, yummy Michigan cherries, and some lilys for my table.

The Farmers Market is located at 315 Detroit Street in Ann Arbor, and is known as the Kerry Town District.

Many of  the streets are still bricked and it is a charming place to take visitors. Parking is hard but there are structures near by, or you can drive "around and around" looking for a spot. Today I hit it lucky and found a place right out in front.

Farmers market corn for Goetz Farm

Kipnicks Orchard has been apart of the farmers market in Ann Arbor for years. That is where I picked up my Michigan cherries. It has been in business since 1958, but changed hands in 2001 and is now owned by Sharon and Bruce Schaffer and Scott Robertello. Sharon is the daughter of the original owners.

Goetz Farm is where I picked up my first of the year fresh corn.  It is owned by Johathan and Karlene Goetz, and their vegetables are always fresh and yummy.

I love Farmers Markets.  Ours in Lovettsville is open every Tuesday from 4-6 p.m.  The local farmer that grows just about everything opened last weekend and he has wonderful local produce.

You can see the fields where the produce is grown, right behind the stand.  I love to know where produce comes from.  I'd just a soon use frozen veg before buying vegetables of unknown origin.

We have on in Grand Rapids and it has great products. I would guess the food contamination scares might make people go to the local markets a bit more.

Missy, Although it's been years, I MiSS our old Farmer's Market!  How fortunate you are to have one.  My Feng Shui Client today in Manhattan also owns in Ann Arbor--I told him when he's ready to sell, I know just the Realtor for him!

Monika, we cooked it last night, the first crop of the year and it was so tender and delicious, I'm going back Wednesday morning.

Carole, that is so exciting, thank you !

Terry, actually I think it will be the opposite, big chains want to know where the veg and fruit are grown. That is where all the problems have come from. The local people are not the issues, it is farmers out of our country.

Russ, LOL

Hi Missy - I love farmer's markets, and we have a great one here in Portsmouth every Saturday morning.  There are several others in the area as well, but none of them as big as the one in Portsmouth.  Nothing beats fresh locally grown produce and locally made products.

Ann

Your pictures turned out wonderful! Makes me hungry for some corn on the cob. I just made up some cards today that will be for my Localism adventure. I made some adjustments and added both my new outside blog and that I write for Localism. I always print cards myself in small batches so I can change them.

Missy, I wish we had a local farmers market that I could go to.  The only time I get to a farmers market is when I visit my daughter in New York City and we go to the farmers market in Union Square.  So I live in Texas and visit NYC to go a farmers market; figure that one out.

Missy- You can just send one of those jugs of pure maple syrup down to us here!  It looks so yummy and I love the jar! Our farmers markets are from December to April.

Hi Missy,
Our local farmers' market has been open since May so we've been frequenting them for awhile now.  The fresh vegetables and fruits are so good.  This weekend I picked up a watermelon, corn and cucumbers.  Yum, Yum!  Oh, I envy your cherries.  I looked at some at the grocery store, $5.99/lb.

What a wonderful looking farmers market. We have one right in my back yard every sunday, well ok I have to go down the elevator and out the door but it's right there. I think more people should support local growers especially in this economy it's win/win for everyone. Plus much better and fresher produce.

There is nothing better than a good farmer's market. When we used to live in Michigan you could get the freshest and best corn...here it's harder to find! I love Michigan cherries!
