Why is it that even for many REALTORS®  who have been been in the business for a long time, the chance to learn new ways of doing things, exchanging ideas and opinions, and being open to new technology, is always exciting?

True there may be a few that resist.

Most, however, are eager to learn and grow.  I find myself, at 71, sometimes wondering how much longer will I be selling real estate.  Yet, when the opportunity presents itself, I like many others, leap at the chance to improve.  There are even times when we go looking for new things to learn.

Many agents that have been at it a long time have embraced new technology with a fervor that surprises even them.  Certainly some of this new technology has opened up avenues to share latent interests.  How many older agents have embraced photography and videotography*?  I believe there are quite a few.  Some agents now have avenues to express themselves by writing of their prior and current experiences buying and selling homes over decades.  With much to share they find themselves blossoming in a field that many thought would leave them by the wayside.

Older agents provide wonderful role models for those entering the profession.  The realization that this is a field you can continue to enjoy well into "maturity" must be seen as the advantage it is.  There is no mandatory retirement age, no set age where you are put out to pasture.

What is required is that you keep current with changes in the industry.   For many of us that is not so much a requirement but rather a way to keep interested in what we do.  Stagnation is not good for any of us.  The more we learn, the more we explore options, the better we become at what we do.  When we perform better the results improve and we have happier clients.  That is the beauty of real estate.

*I don't believe there is such a word, yet cinematography sounds way too professional.

Kate,

Real estate and mortgages certainly will keep your mind sharp, whether more advanced in age or not, as things change constantly. Now it of course depends on you if you want to embrace all the new stuff. Good post.

Kate, if you didn't tell us, I would have never guessed that you were 71.  Of course, I was trained well never to ask a woman her age.  Yesterday I learned that my client's 87 year old father is a former Golden Glove boxer and still rides his bicycle about 5 miles every day!

Being more mature in years doesn't mean you can't keep up with new technology and new methods in the industry.  I personally think that you are doing a fine job and are an inspiration to many.

KATE - I had no idea what your age was, but good for you for being one of the ones that cares enough about being a professional to embrace new ideas.  I've seen a number of veterans that are locked into the old school, and some can barely check their e-mail.  They can only use a computer to look up homes on the MLS.  Great to see someone blogging into their 70's!

I think that the days of the previous generations being carted off to homes will increasingly become even more rare. As people become more health conscious, it seems they not only are living longer lives, but more active lives. I think that the drive to do something is at least half the battle.

Kate, I hope that I have the energy and willingness to learn new things when I am 71.  Even at my age, I am continually being challenged to learn new technology.  The "videotography" - your word, maybe misspelled... is an example of something I still need to learn...soon.  Great post!

I enjoy learning new things.  It can be scary at times...  However, I think it helps us grow.  :)

A 41 year old woman made the American Swim Team and is going to the Olympics for the fifth time.  I was very impressed considering she was competing against 20 year olds!!!

Hi Kate,
You remind me of my Grannie (though she is several years older than you) but what I mean is your enthusiasm and eagerness to continue to learn and keep up with "whatever comes along".  I believe continuing to learn keeps ones mind and spirit young.

Hi Esko...I share you feelings.  Being willing to learn makes life much more interesting and certianly vital if we want to continue to work.  We owe it to our clients.

That was wonderfully written and great advice for every age bracket in every industry. What is your favorite new type of technology used in real estate? Mine is text message marketing. I love the simplicty of updating information whenever I want. Here is a great article on how to use text messaging http://www.drivebuytech.com/news/mnews/mnews_foreclosuresmass.html
