This is exciting news for me and thought I'd pass it along. If you're not aware of what the Biscayne-Everglades Greenway is (or will be, rather) here it is in a nutshell: when fully developed, it will be a multi-purpose trail and greenway loop that will link south Miami-Dade communities, including the Miami Redlands, Homestead and many more with Biscayne and Everglades National Parks. There are two events coming up next week I thought I'd share with everyone.
The first is a community workshop being held on March 22, 2007 from 6:00-8:00PM at the Miami-Dade College Homestead Campus. 500 College Terrace in Homestead, Florida, Aviation Building F, second floor in Room F222-F223. The City of Homestead, Miami-Dade County, the Florida Office of Greenways and Trails, National Parks Service, numerous other organizations, local businesses and citizens extend an invitation to all interested to attend. Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP by contacting Mark Heinicke of the Miami-Dade Park and Recreation Department by phone at 305-755-5461 or by email at MHEINIC@miamidade.gov .
This workshop is the second for this particular project. The selected Greenway route will be reviewed. There will be a focus on key issues and amenities along the Greenway which will be incorporated into the final Master Plan. It will begin with a preview of displays and exhibits followed by brief presentations from local leaders, presentation of the draft Greenway Plan update by the consultant, Glatting Jackson, followed by breakout groups and public input, led by member of the Miami Chapter of the Amrican Institute of Architects (AIA). Please try to attend and don't forget to RSVP!
The second event being held is the AIA Design Workshop for the Greenway on March 24, 2007. It is being hosted by the Miami Chapter of the AIA which has the Biscayne-Everglades Greenway as its Blueprint for America community project for 2007. It is an all-day event from 8:00AM-6:00PM Volunteers are being solicited to participate in the designing part of the workshop taking place from 8:00AM-11:00AM. No, you don't need any art skills, just the willingness to assist the architects and other designers with your input for the Greenway. Reservations will be taken at the Community Workshop on the 22nd and will be limited to the first 50 people who sign up. The designers will then partake of some studio time from 11:00AM-5:00PM so they can unveil their professional designs in the evening.
Everyone is invited to the unveiling of the visuals and renderings from the all-day workshop! This will take place from 5:00PM-6:00PM. Light refreshments will be served. If you'd like to attend, please contact Mindy McKay of Forbes Architects by phone at 305-446-0849 X 120 or via email at mmckay@famiami.com
Blueprint for America is the primary program for AIA 150, a yearlong observance in 2007 that marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of the American Institute of Architects. It is a nationwide initiative through which AIA architects engage with other professionals, local citizens, and local government to collaborate on a community service program that addresses a community's distinct need. It was created to offer citizens throughout America the opportunity to celebrate their community heritage. Let's hear it for the AIA!
