I just got back from a great, relaxing (surprisingly) family vacation.  I read 7 books and started my 8th by the time I packed up the beach house and headed back home.  Here's a list of what I read.

AbsurdistanVery strange book, but strangely funny.  This book is, in my opinion, really a man's book.  It was crude but some parts were laugh out loud funny.

Trial by Fury: A MysteryA J.P. Beaumont mystery by J.A. Jance.  I realized halfway into this one that I had read it before but since I couldn't remember who-done-it, I finished it.  I like J. A. Jance, although I like the Joanne Brady series more than I like J.P.

The Astonishing Power of EmotionsMy son's best friend's mom gave this to me as a gift since we were taking her son on vacation with us.  I have a hard time reading these kind of books, and I am still working on it.  I find that I drift back to fiction.  Could it be that I find fiction easier to deal with than my own life??  Hmmm.

Here on Earth (Oprah's Book Club)This was about a married woman who goes back to her hometown to attend a funeral and meets up with an old romance.  This was really a cautionary tale about how not to screw up your marriage.

BetrayalI love this author and I love the main characters, Dismas Hardy and Abe Glitsky.  This was probably the best book I read while on vacation.  Dismas Hardy is an attorney, Abe Glitsky is the detective and the book centers around the Iraq war.  Very, very good.

Playing For Pizza: A NovelThis was one of John Grisham's departures from the law and thrillers.  It was a nice read but not his best book.  Great descriptions of Italy and the food there made it very worthwhile reading.

Fearless Fourteen (Stephanie Plum, book 14) I love this series.  It's a quick one day read for me and that is with me stalling so it won't end so quickly.  Madcap girl, handsome boyfriend and dangerous flirtation with a gorgeous other man.  Frolicking and fun.

Everything She Thought She WantedI am about halfway finished with this one.  I like this author, very English.  This is a very good read and I am enjoying it. It follows the lives of two women, one right after WWII, who is a happily married 40 something woman who finds herself attracted to a much younger other man, and a modern day woman in her 30's who is married to a man who desperately wants children and she doesn't think she does.  Their lives are supposed to intersect at some point but so far, they have not.

I read one more, titled Innocence, that was so bad it really isn't worth mentioning.  One of the few books I tossed in the trash because I wouldn't recommend to anyone.

Let me know what you've read so far this summer.

Susan, I am very impressed with your reading prowess. I have read some Grisham books in the past, the thriller types. Will have to get back to you with my non-fiction entries or maybe you only wanted fiction ones to compare to. I didn't know about that Group here to join. I will join right away. My, you must be a fast reader to devour that many in 15 days (or you had plenty of time on your hands). I read everything I can get my hands on personally, but did you know the average American reads maybe only one book per year? The other strong benefit from what you are doing is reading (fiction in particular) in addition to giving you a great imagination very much increases your vocabulary. You should couple this with doing crossword puzzles and you will never have dementia. Kudos on your reading skills. I knew you were the brain surgeon all along ; )

Hey Susan, that was a great reading list. Please post this at Club Chaos as well so the family can comment on it. Select edit, scroll down and check your Club Chaos selection box under groups, then re-post. Thank you. My recreational reading is a bunch of computer forensic text books I have to finish to get my certificate. They are no where near as fun as your list, although they are very interesting to read... (how geek chic can one be?)

Isn't Stephanie Plum just too funny, lol.   (I'm on #9 !)      Isn't it great to come home actually relaxed from a vacation!    instead of the usual  -- needing a vacation to get over the vacation, haha.  Glad you had fun down the shore, Susan.

Susan, I love that you read all different types of books---and you sure got a LOT of reading done.  I love Ester and Jerry Hicks though I haven't read that book yet..

Susan - Good to have you back, my friend!  You are a fast reader (me, too).  :-)  I hadn't seen your group before, but I joined tonight.  I need to write a few book reports!

Susan - welcome back!  Glad to see you survived all that togetherness.  I am still working on the two series you started me on, Elizabeth George and Martha Grimes.  I'm making sure to read them in order, as you suggested.

Susan,

When did you find time to do anything else?  I would not even finished 1/3 of one book, you do love to read.

Welcome back ma'am.

I'm not a book reader unless it's for some course I have to take or the sports section of the news and reading online..sports...financial news etc...but the first book cover looks pretty weired and my wife has read at least a few of the Janet Evanovich books.

The extent of the reading I get done on vacations is yet another reading of Goodnight Moon (I have twin 4-year olds) or the occasional blog or two read on my cell phone. In fact, that's how I read this one... Perhaps in a few more years, I will have more time to relax on my vacations...until then, it looks like you do enough reading for the both of us.

Gary, I've tried crossword puzzles and even though I read all the time, I find them difficult.  My mom does them to ward off dementia, as my grand-mom had alzheimer's disease.  I read non-fiction too, just not nearly as often.  I love autobiographies of people I admire.

Carolyn, My heart goes out to you reading all of that dry stuff!!  Whenever I was studying anything, I missed my novels!

Kara, I love Stephanie Plum too!  I'm in Ranger's court!  How about you?

Carole, I read a lot and very fast.  My house usually looks like a bomb went off because I read lots of times instead of picking up after everyone!

Jason, it's very good to be back!  One of the joys of vacation is coming home!  I'd love to see your book list!

Don, I read to live, I really do.  When I was a little girl, I used to read under my covers with a flashlight when I was supposed to be sleeping!  Unfortunately, I was so little I read aloud still and my mom always caught me!!

Neal, Your wife has good taste in funny books.

Rich, Even though I always worked when my babies were small, I always found time to read because that is what centers me.

Welcome back Susan! Sounds like you did a lot of reading. Sounds so relaxing. I bet you didn't miss AR at all!  ;)

Michael, I am almost ashamed to admit that I visited with some of my favorites almost everyday!!  I rode my bike to the local library!

Susan, I guess it's not so bad for me since I really do like computers... however, I must confess, they are days when I just can't wrap my mind around the math.

OK Susan, as promised, Mr. non-fiction man returns with five of his most recently read books:

1) The Power of Nice, Linda Kaplan, talks about conquering the business world with kindness. Appropriate book of course for me. But a woman should never call a man "nice." It's the kiss of death in the romance department. No woman wants Mr. Nice. They all want the bad boys, so hold out with your bad self and keep the nice under wraps until they know you better.

2) The 4-Hour Workweek, Timothy Ferris, young guy who talks about globe trotting and delegating everything and working very little. A little naive in my opinion plus he doesn't have a family. First half of book is good. You can stop there.

3) Reading People, Jo-Ellan Dimitrius, great paperback on picking up on all the non-verbals and reading between the lines with people. I am REAL good at this now.

4) Cure for the Common Life, living in your sweet spot, Max Lucado, super book on optimizing your life from a great spiritual writer and finding your uniqueness. I love being ME and this reinforced it.

and finally

5) The Renaissance Soul, Margaret Lobenstine. If you want to know who Gary is this is my owner's manual. I am different than most everyone else... because I have a huge multitude of interests and people just don't get why I can't stay focused. This book very well explains who I am. Too many passions to pick from.

Thanks for tuning me into this Realtors that Read Group. You should have told me earlier, I would have joined right away, but I didn't know. YOU'RE MAKING ME WORK!! I know, your form of torture with me ; )

Gary,  I have to add some of these to my reading list, although these kind of books are slow going for me.  Your comment about people not understanding why you can't stay focused made me smile.  Michael, my older son and I were driving one day and I was saying that Jack has a one track mind.  Michael looked at me and said and you are the exact opposite of him... you are telling me a story, and you look out the window and comment on the pretty flowers, then you switch over to what you are reading, then you switch over to something else....

Susan ~ I have to admit that I am a self-help junkie!  I hardly ever read fiction.  If I do it is something like Og Mandino that is self-help in fiction's clothing.  The other fiction category I read is Children's books. haha.  Dr. Suess is our family favorite.  My older kids like Harry Potter etc....but when the y get into that stuff, I let them go it alone on those.  I also re-read many of these classics so I don't read a ton of new stuff, just re-read the stuff that I already have but haven't mastered.

I did just get a new book.  "Where have all the Leaders gone?  By Lee Iacocca  Pretty good so far....just started though.

I also have a very short attention span so I LOVE magazine articles because I can read it all in one sitting and be done.  So I subscribe to Success Magazine that has some great articles, and comes with a CD/DVD that I can watch, and listen to in my car untill the next one comes.

Boring I know.....I'm impressed with how much you read.  My mom is that way and I wish I were more like that.

Pam, it's the self help books that I have such a problem with!  If only good parenting can be learned by simply buying the damn books, I would be a sure winner!  I have "how to get organized books", "how to be a good parent" books. "how to lose belly fat" books, All kind of woo-woo Marianne Williamson type books that I'm sure are very good but are simply sitting on my shelf while I read another who-done-it!!  I would be rich, thin, and a very good parent if I only gave up my fiction reading!!  Oh, and I would be extraordinarily organized!!  But, I did love Dr. Seuss, Where is Brown?  Mr. Brown is out of Town!  And my personal favorite was always the Foot Book and Green Eggs and Ham... I will not eat them here or there... I will not eat them anywhere!!  I even made the boys green eggs on Dr. Seuss's birthday one year!!.  I also have re-read, many times most of Dickens, and I think I read Gone with the Wind and Jane Eyre at least 6 times each!  I don't know nothin about birthin no babies... Lol!

07/14/2008 09:52 PM by Susan Mangigian, West Chester PA Realtor RE/MAX Preferred, ABR (RE/MAX Preferred, West Chester, PA, RS152252A)

I made green eggs and ham one year too and my very strong willed child (who was about 3) had a huge fit because eggs are not supposed to be green!!!  It was sooo funny, I wish I had it on tape!

I said I read all the self help books....I didn't say I actually have figured out how to get myself to DO it all! ; )    The never ending journey.....

07/14/2008 11:57 PM by Meridian Idaho Real Estate ~ Pam Pugmire (All Pro Realty)

Don't feel bad you two. I used to hang out in the self help row of the bookstore myself and bring boatloads of these books home on how to be better organized, how to manage your finances, etc. They all are gathering dust somewhere, and it's obvious I'm still a certified mess.
