The Agriculture Building - Raleigh Historical Buildings - Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour - Raleigh Relocation Package

The Agriculture Building in downtown Raleigh is just one of over 60 points of interest on the official Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour.

The Agriculture Building is stop #29, and is just north, and across the street from, the State Capital Building.

Raleigh area architects Murray Nelson and Thomas W. Cooper designed the Agriculture Building, which houses the State Department of Agriculture

The Agriculture Building was constructed in 1923, and is a nice example of the Neoclassical Revival style that was common in that era.

The exterior is nicely detailed, particularly the entry facing the State Capital.

The three story tall columns and well-balanced stone exterior give the Agriculture Building a stately look reminiscient of some of the government buildings in Washington, DC.

As a point of interest - a rear wing was added in 1950 to house the state Museum of Natural Sciences.  However, the collections quickly outgrew the space, and the Museum of Natural Sciences now has it's own building a few blocks away.

Take a look at the Agriculture Building next time you're in downtown Raleigh, or enjoy the over 60 stops on the Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour!

Penny,
You are a blogging machine.  :0)

I love downtown Raleigh with its beautiful old buildings.  Some of my fondest memories are the time I spent at St. Mary's.

Leesa - The walking tour is a great way to get some exercise while enjoying so much of Raleigh's early history!

Cynthia - St. Mary's will be featured soon :).  Sometimes we forget that Raleigh was founded in 1792, not long at all after the Declaration of Independence was signed.
