When it comes to curb appeal with a powerful pop their is nothing better, in my opinion, to use in Hawaii and tropical climes than the Pua Aloalo or Hibiscus. Hibiscus can be potted (pots for hibiscus should be a minimum of 10 inches) and or used as hedging. It grows quickly and provides beautiful blossoms all year long. It does require frequent fertilizing and full sun.

It is believed that only five species of the tropical hibiscus are native to Hawaii. Over time cultivators began hybridizing the Hawaiian species with imported varieties, resulting in an amazing selection of colors, shapes, and sizes.

Although pricing varies depending on where you live, Hibiscus are relatively inexpensive compared to other flowering trees and shrubs.

Kimo ~ I love Hibiscus!  What a beautiful plant.  I had one in my yard once (we renovated so it got destroyed) that was taller than me (I'm 5'6") and the flowers on it were huge, almost platter size flowers. It's definitely a great impact plant.  Nice post!

Love Hibiscus...I have one I am nursing, although it doens't like California as much as it would Hawaii.  You need to be our Expert in Hawaii.  Let's talk.

Hi Kimo! Hibiscus hedges are all over Florida.  We are in the tropical zone here so pretty much the same type of climate is shared with Hawaii and other islands.  There are some really cool hybrids if you check catalogues....gigantic ones, tree-like pink ones (Andersson) that I used to have (love them as they towered over a brick walkway), and the bright red ones are typical landscaping for the Ritz-Carlton hotels here in Florida.  They definitely need the fertilizer or they get too shaggy looking!!  Regards-Kathleen

I love these flowers.  I grew up in warm, sunny Southern California and we had them along our fence-red ones that bloomed almost all year.  Beautiful post!! Mahalo.

Kimo -- what beautiful photos.  You have a lot of great suggestions -- and using native plants is always a good idea.  Now, I just need a place in Hawaii to go with those flowers.

I love hibiscus as well. We had a huge bush in our yard, however here in CA they become highly prone to a tiny nuisance called the White Fly.  They are no bigger than a gnat, nest in the bush (which almost looks like white mold or "fuzz") and eventually destroys the plant if gone unchecked. =(

What would your suggestions be for Massachusetts?  Wish we had the tropical selection you shared.

Aloha Joyce,

Geraniums, Petunias, Impatience, and Cosmo are what I have used in New England. All have Great color varieties but I think Impatience take the prize for affordability and zing factor. Marigolds are lovely too but color wise their limited. Thanks for your question.

Peace,
