In my keynotes and seminars, I often relate the story of the airplane announcement about putting on your oxygen mask first, in the event of decompression, before helping the child (or person acting like a child screaming beside you). I ask "why" and, of course, the audience knows....you can't help anyone if you don't have oxygen going to your brain!
There are, it seems, many agents working today without oxygen going to their brains......Have you met them?

Today, I went to my first Yoga class in a few years. I am on summer vacation. I have made a committment to take care of myself. Before taking care of anyone else. I know if I do that, it will be good for me, but, even better, it will be good for the people I serve. I can be a model of sanity and peace in a world where it is normal to work too many hours, neglect health and relationships all in the name of being "successful".

How about you, are you enjoying yourself this summer and taking care of yourself?

Being selfish isn't about hurting anyone else. It's about getting oxygen to your brain first so you can do the best job in making a difference in the world.

Joeann, scheduling is the key to our 'selfishness'.  Pam has her aerobics, spinning, etc on her schedule as if the sessions were clients.  I do much the same for my 'selfish' needs.  I try to run in the early morning well before anyone wants to think about viewing homes or welcoming me into their home for a listing appointment so that piece is solved.

End result - as you state - you HAVE TO take care of yourself if you expect to take care of others.

Joeann- Every weekend, there are early morning, open doubles, at Westport's Longshore tennis courts.  Unless I'm out of town or the courts are closed for rain, that's the way I start Saturday and Sunday mornings, all summer long.  It's definitely something I do for me.

Nice post, Joann!  Health and relationships are really importatn, and so often we shortchange them.

I have a date with the treadmill three times a week.  I multitask and read while I'm walking.

Tim Sounds like you have your priorities in the right order! I bet your business is thriving too! Good for you.

Marilyn Tennis is one of my favorite pastimes too! Hubby usually beats me, but I'm in it for the fun and exercise!

Patricia Thanks

Lorrie A smart woman, you are!

Joeann - I've been prioritizing "my time" for walking, bike riding, pilates, and bow flex.  I can usually manage to fit at least one of those in every day.  Early morning and late evening work well for me - and often with friends - that way I can fit my social and fitness needs in at the same time.  I love it!

Joeann, Can't think of anyone better to take of.... than ourselves.  I do go to the gym 3 times a week with a personal trainer.  It is time to grab that O2 mask!

Enjoy your yoga! Care to share any photos? :)

I learned a valuable lesson from the past, I did not take care of myself, I spread myself out thin, and paid for it physically and emotionally.  A major event forced me to take a hard look, and now I take time for me, diet exercise, relaxation and fun stuff.  In the past my life was based around work, now my work is based around my life.

Wow, what an interesting way of thinking about it. I think you are right about the way we perceive the word selfish to mean. I guess, I need to start making sure I'm alive or my clients won't have anyone to serve them or my family having someone to provide for them.
