"Be sure to have friends who demand more of you rather than tell you why you cannot do what you want to do." ~Robert Kiyosaki

Robert Kiyosaki - Rich Dad Poor Dad

This quote speaks volumes on how to be successful in life.  It's not just learning the best techniques, reading great books, or attending investment meetings.  It's changing your attitude and your overall outlook on life and business.  It's surrounding yourself with people that have the same beliefs and outlook that you have and surrounding yourself with people that stay positive and are optimistic.  I've also heard the saying that you are who you hang out with and I absolutely believe this to be true.  If you're spending all of your time with pessimistic people that are constantly talking about how bad the economy is, how bad the job market is, and how bad life in general is, it's not only going to affect your short term attitude, it's going to prevent you from really getting ahead.

Now I'm not telling you to drop your friends and never talk to these people again but be aware of who you are spending the majority of your time with.  I still talk to and spend time with my friends that are pessimistic about things but I have made it clear that they can't talk like that around me.  Those that refuse are not people that I associate myself with anymore.  If someone is a true friend, they will respect your request to not be constantly pessimistic.  Constructive criticism, discussions, and divergent view points?  Absolutely, I love talking to people with different ideas!

Jared

We are all such chameleons, and we do get affected by the "surround sound" of our immediate universe.

We can change the channel, then, to the more "up" messages.

Thanks for sharing -- attitude really is "it".

Li, That's a great way of explaining it!  Thanks for commenting.

You're exactly right. The people you spend your time with have a HUGE impact on your personality, ideas, beliefs, and business. It is unfortunate that many of us have to make choices to refuse being around negative influences.

The best way to find a good friend is to be one (as cheesy as that sounds!) The fact is, if you exhibit confidence and set goals for yourself, you will natually attract others who do the same!

Thanks for the post!

I really enjoyed reading Robert Kiyosaki.  I started reading his books in college and was fascinated, coming from a blue collar family. It just made sense and I bought my 1st property at age 23.  Since then I've purchase and sold 8 or 9 properties, (mostly purchased) and I just turned 31.  Real estate is a great way to gain wealth, but it's still has to be looked at as a long term investment.  I haven't done any creative financing, just the good ol traditional way of saving up a downpayment.

Robert Kiyosaki is great.  If I had to pick one turning point in my life that got me to where I am right now and completely changed my perspective, it would be reading "Rich Dad Poor Dad".

I formerly taught school in Toledo and I taught what's best described as "Welcome Back, Kotter".  My job was to turn around 14 & 15 year old potential drop-outs.  I always urged them to choose their friends and who they hung around with wisely.  One of my favorite point makers went as follows:  "If you step in a pile of dog poop, that doesn't make you dog poop - but you sure smell like what you've been around."  Not as elegant as Robert Kiyosaki, but the point was made and understood.

Ha!  I like that analogy Richard.  I'm sure that made a much bigger impact on a 14-15 year old as opposed to you are who you hang out with.

Absolutely True! There are some people out there that create a negative engergy around you and it makes you feel like you're trying to climb a mountain with chains around your legs. I love people that are upbeat, optimistic, funny, inspiring and generally positive about anything in life. They make you feel like you can do anything, they inspire you to try harder! So, I make it a point to stay away from the whinners and associate with the winners!

I have been a student of R.Kiyosaki 3 years ago. His training is phenominal.  I remember one quote he had, "you want to be around people that propells you as opposed to people that pulls you down (like crabs).  And this includes even friends and family.
