Atlanta, Georgia - Comparing Cost of Renting vs. Buying

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Around Atlanta GA RE License #296541
Atlanta, Georgia was named one of the "66 Cities Where it Makes Sense to Buy" a home. In a related article, buying vs. renting in the country's 100 largest metro areas was compared to show whether it's a good time to buy in those areas or whether renters should just continue to rent for now. See below for Atlanta's impressive ranking!

"Remember," the article warns, "even within a city, affordability will vary by neighborhood. Prices for rents and purchases in the chart below are averages, including some high-priced neighborhoods and others where values may be depressed because, for instance, they're far out in the suburbs with an expensive commute and an oversupply of new construction."

Again, you'll notice Atlanta, Georgia, about halfway down the list -- just to the negative side for buying. But for an average difference of just $167 more per month, renters can consider buying a home and starting to build equity in their own property (instead of in their landlord's).

Table: Buying vs. renting in 100 largest metros
(sorted from high to low, where the monthly cost to rent a two-bedroom unit makes the most sense compared to the costs of a 6% loan on a low-cost home)
