"For listings in the $250,000-$500,000 range, agents spent an average of $682 per listing"

This is probably the bulk of the homes on the market in Baltimore at least. I wonder how accurate this study is.

I also wonder why if this statistic is true, so much more money is spent on print as opposed to online advertising:

"Only 20 percent of the agents said they felt newspapers were an 'effective' way to market their homes, while 49 percent felt online advertising was 'very effective.' "

So it's proven that more people find the home they buy on the internet than in print. Agents believe online advertising is more effective than print. Yet nationwide, online advertising is barely half of print spending in the Real Estate category. Borrell predicts online spending will surpass print by 2012, but that's a long time for guys like me to wait!

4 Comments on Online real estate spending to surpass print by 2012

I wonder if you add time spent and your per hour average (some agents spend much more time on each listing then others) what the total would be.

I believe agents spend money on print because the seller can see it, hold and feel it. Just like Open house day (which or course has only 2% chance of selling) I don't do to much print the newpaper NEVER, total waste of money.

Hi Carson,  I am originally from Baltimore, Idewyle area.  My mom still lives there and my sons are down there as well.  Glad I found you, and your site.  It is a great way to keep on top of what is going on down there.

Print advertising is way down in our market in New Jersey.  We use to get a lot of business from the Real Estate Book but have found that does not work well for print either.  I did sell a house from an online buyer looking at the site.

Darin: I hear that all the time from agents and it kills me! A lot of agents cave. But you're the experts, you know what works and what is a waste of money. Educate those sellers and bring on 2012!
