There are many sites that constitute social bookmarking but for the purposes of this post, I would like to tell about one site that will make your online lives so much easier.
The site is delicious often seen as del.icio.us and it is a book marking site that makes finding your book marked sites so much easier. When saving a booked marked site in your browser or on ActiveRain so you can return to it, you would have to know the site name to be able to find it, especially if you are like me and save lots of sites.

With del.icio.us, you can save your site by using words or phases that best represent your in interest in the site. For example. On ActiveRain, it provides a way for you to book mark a post. You can go to you bookmarked post any time you want. What's missing is why you saved the post in the first place.

Brad Andershon does a lot of tutorials on ActiveRain for instance. So suppose you bookmarked his post on ActiveRain. You would want to go back and read through your bookmarked sites. But do you actually go back and read them? Most don't, so the effort to bookmark is actually a lost exercise. Now if you had set up free account with delicious, you would also have set up the two buttons on your Google Tool Bar. One button with the word del.icio.us to search and go to the bookmarked sites and the other button called 'Tag' allows you to save a post, a web site, even just a page on a site, just anything you want. And the best thing is you decide the tags that you would look for if you wanted to pull up that site or post.

One of Brad's great tutorials was about using Video. So you might think to tag that post, video, But he also mentioned the Flip and editing software so you would probably add those words. How about Brads Andershon's name? Might you think you would like to find everthing you saved of his posts by searching his name?

So, what's the social aspect of del.ic.ious about? Here is an easy way to think of it. What if I liked Brad's posts as well. Wouldn't I be inclined to bookmark and use tag words that I also thought represented Brad's post or web site?  Yes. When you do a search for your tagged word video, as an example, your saved post of Brad's will pop up. But if you look further down , you will notice that I and others also saved Brad's post as well. In fact if you use the search bar, you will find the best sites and sources of just about everything on the internet already all categorized and you can save them as your sites just by clicking on them and adding the tags you want to remember them by. This time you now understand the social benefits. You will see all the words or tags that others used to save the site by and you can pick their words as well and at the same time, expand the number of search possibilities by adding to your tags list.

Watch this video and you will see how easy all this is to do. When del.icio.us was first taught to me, it was when Jim Cronin of the Real Estate Tomato designed my web site. He kept saying this was one of the best features of the internet to be able to do this so easily and it's free. I will admit it took me a while to recognize just how right he was. It is indispensable in my life and I save everything of any interest as I work. I was saving stuff and just didn't notice that others had saved it as well. But I sure appreciate the lesson and social bookmarking is fantastic.

So here is a really cool thought for you. Are you saving every post that you write on ActiveRain or your outside blog and all your content tags?  Why not?  Remember this is the most popular social bookmarking site on the internet and when those tags from your post are searched, guess what comes up? Your post. Now you have a built in audience and you are also providing great information. Those who use social bookmarking ( the brightest people on planet or that use the internet) may just like what you have said in your article and become your next best new client.

William:  I do use my browser bookmark for sites but, not posts!  I bookmark on AR but, rarely have the time to go back and look at them!  When I do, I absolutely am overwhelmed with all of the ones that  I WANT to read but, don't have the time!  Business is a bit slow right now so maybe I'll have the time to catch up!

Joan, it has been a real time saver for me and when I talked about del.icio.us, no one seemed to know except that it was often seem on blog sites. So, I wanted to share what I know about it and you will LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Save everything, tags words should always have the name of the site in case you are looking for it by name. Mostly people save by the need for the site, e.g., widgets mortgage rates. See the words use a space to divide, not commas. try it is it easy and you will be very happy you did.

PS, don't forget to save every post of your and anyone's you want to look up later.

Hi William - Very good explanation of the benefits of del.icio.us to complement the CommonCraft video. Many of us have the social networking part of the web down, now we need to work on social bookmarking.

William - Thanks so much for breaking this down.  Delicious was on my mental list of sites I had to figure out someday but I never get to it.  I always see the name around but never really understood what it was all about.  In fact, I never really understood "social bookmarking" until you just explained it.  This one post was worth the price of admission to AR.  Well, actually, it is worth more than that since AR is free.

Thanks again for the great info.  Keep it coming.

Aloysius (Al), that is a very interesting name , where does it come from. I had a client named Aloise. Is that the female version of the name? Or not related?

Hi Gary, You will love this. It is easy but more imprtantly it will change your pint of refernce when you want to save things or loook them up. Can't wait to hear how you like using this. Just don't forget to save your own posts. Use the tag words of the posts and watch what happens when you check back and see who else saves your post.

William,  I read my Del.icio.us bookmarks more often than I do my AR bookmarks.  Actually, If I really intend to read it I put it on Del.icio.us and if I might get to it some day I AR bookmark it.

This sounds awesome - managing my bookmarks is one of my biggest dilemas.  So are you saying that if I were to save a bookmarked site on removing stains from carpet, that when I searched for it, I would not only find my site, but other sites relative that also deal with "removing stains?"

Does it ever get overwhelming?

I'm on my lap top at the cottage so I need to download it here on my tool bar, so don't go check yet....but I will be bookmarking this on delicious.

William - I don't really know much about where the name comes from.  I just googled it and apparently neither does anyone else because on 3 different sites it had 3 different origins.  It was my favorite uncle's name.  Not sure about Aloise either.  I have always gone by "Al" but I like the idea that my name is a little different. I've never met another Aloysius...yet.

Hi Jimmy, With the bookmarking not only easy but right there on the tool bar it is actually easier to save something right when you are thinking of it. If you get to the comment are, it is not advisable to go back and save as you will lose what you have written in the comment box. Because del.icio.us opens in a new screen, not fear of that happening and it keeps everything in one place.

Hi Missy, Your point makes it clear that we all can learn to optimize our efforts in most everything. We are all the same when you think about it, we only have so much time and if we can learn these things over time in small chunks, it makes it so much easier. At least it is for me. There are still so many areas of things I want to learn more about, like optimizing SEO and we can chip them away one at at a time.

I see posts and I am sure when someone see the title about bookmarking they sort of , well "who needs that" and then you read it and find a little treasure that can literally change everything for the positive.

As one of our Ca. blogging friends says all the time ( makes me laugh everytime) , "Who'd have thunk it".

So my real point is , I am always on the look out for the little treasures that optimize things for me and I love it when I can find one that would benefit us all. We all need  these things anyway and then discovering that one might actually get business from it, it sort puts it in a different light.

Hi Kate, The best way to assure that you are right is when you actually do it. In fact, set up your delicious account. Before you even save your own stain remover site information, use the search box to see what others saved and you will we  that there is nothing in your save  but then you will notice " everybody else's"  saves and they are excellent. Like I said, it is better than a Google search because the other's have already researched it and found some of the best sites already. Saves you a lot of time of having to  discover things on your own. Just give it a try. Wait till youstart saving your posts, they get interesting to see who else is saving them.

Hi Connie and it is even easier than I said . You will see. When you realize that just this one thing will provide you some of the best things already researched on the net and when you are writing posts, it can save you a lot of research time because unless you are the only one on the planet with a subject so unique that no one ever thought of it, you will finds so much great info and it becomes really fun to see what you save as opposed to others. After you save something , do a search on your tag words and see what you discover. I hate to over simplify something, but it may literally be the best thing since sliced bread. Search sliced bread and see what you find. :-). You will see a lot of Seth Godin  discussing marketing ideas ,which in fact this can be a part of by saving your own posts. Enjoy!

Kate, When you go to Delicious.com you have to register. The second thing is to install the buttons. I will go back and edit my post because i used the icons and that may have confused as opposed to making it clear. So I will edit the post. Thanks for mentioning your difficulty because there shouldn't be any. It is very straight forward.

Hey William, thanks when I went there last night I was directed to this really wierd website that looked like a adwords site. I figured out the problem - last night I copied and pasted the url at the end of you post into my browser- you need to remove the .com from the link. It takes us to the wrong place. The correct url is: http://del.icio.us/ I'd make is a live link but I can't never realized that you couldn't put live links in comments before!!

Hi Linda, I have such a great idea and I experimented with it and it was awesome. Once you register, click on your del.icioi.us button and search the word Cheeseman. See what comes up. This was one of our new groups featured posts and I saved it for the author on del.icio.us and we could this for each of the posts we feature each week to give the author some special recognition on the social bookmarking site. When ever their tags words are searched, they come up. How cool is that?

Hi Lynda, We started our new Group on Wednesday, the Internet Empowered Consumers group. I had an idea about using delicious to help those that wrote the best posts to get a little extra Google Juice. So I saved a few and various people are testing the voracity of the theory. So I saved a post from someone you know, Sally Cheeseman. I used tags that she used. So then I log on to delicious and typed in Cheeseman and everything I added of hers in the notes plus all her tags showed up. One of the tags besides Cheeseman was va. So I did a search and sure enough it showed up and I needed others to check their searches, since I am favored as I am the one that saved it so it would naturally come up in my search. Give it a try and let me know what happens. Anyway the point being that I am discussing this with the other moderators and seeing if we add all the star'd featured posts from the group to del.icio.us as a bonus. I will report on this next week when we are 1 week old as group and we write the week in review of the featured posts. On a different matter, are you going to SF for the conference. I sure wish I was going but need to remain here and handle work and my yorkie that is now requiring round the clock care for here cancer. Priorities. That is what my life is being reduced to,lol.

This was a great suggestion, William. I know about the site but to date have not spent time learning about it and what it can do. Now I don't need to. I save a ton of sites, although I must say I often do not go back to them as often as I would like, or can't easily findthem and give up.

William - This is a great tool.  I have one question I couldn't find an answer for on Delicious.

Can you use more than one word in your tag?  If I tag something as Ridgewood blog info it shows up a 3 different tags

Ridgewood

Blog

Info

However, using this system I will wind up having too many entries under any one of these and it won't be specific enough. Does that make sense?  If I wanted to get back to the great article on Ridgewood blogs I would have to dig through all the entries tagged for "blogs" or "Ridgewood" - of which there may eventually be 100's under each tag.  I am sure there is a way to use two-word tags but I can't figure it out.

Maybe I have to just make them one word?  RidgewoodBlog?

Any ideas?

Thanks.

-Al

Hi Aloysius, If you look at the tag line, at the end of that line, you will botice that it says the tags are saved with a space divider. If you want 3 words, do not add a space between the words, then it saves the site as that phrase. You may use as many different tags as you like, I always use tags that work for me and the way I think. After a while you begin to notice the other tags that were used by other users. I also save the site by the name of the site which I noticed that others do only rarely. What is cool is that del.icio.us allows you to do it your way.

Thanks for the post and the tip.
