Front porch charm and century old Maple trees.

The date in the tax records show that this 2 story block home was built in 1924 but we know that is not true. The present owner's Father had the house built in 1909. By the time she was born in 1923 (in the same room in which she still sleeps), she was the last of four children to be born in the home, but the first girl born on what was then called Key Avenue. So from someone who really knows the history, the house was built in 1909 and was the first home on Cheswolde Road. As an aside, when completed in August 1909, the house stood in Baltimore County, but in 1919 Baltimore City annexed the area when it moved its northern boundary from North Ave. to its present line near Willowglen.

When built the house was wired for electricity and plumbed for illuminating gas. Electricity got there first, so the gas system was never used. Some of the original lighting fixtures are still in the attic.

In 1923 the streetcar line which had originally been laid from Mount Washington to Emory Grove (Glyndon) was stub ended at the intersection of Cheswolde and Greenspring. Thus Cheswolde Rd. literally became the "end of the line" for the streetcar locally referred to as "the Tripper." Today MTA has a bus stop on Greenspring Ave. at the foot of the street.

This home is filled with nostalgia and is awaiting your personal touch. Remember when homes had wide porches, high ceilings, large dining rooms and more lumber than was needed. The owners refer to the structure as "overbuilt" and you don't find this construction in today's homes.

Warm gas steam heat and hardwood floors on the first floor and pine wood in the four bedrooms upstairs.

The modern kitchen has a dishwasher, gas cooking and a walk-in pantry. The first floor also has a full bath.

So much history, we don't need the walls to talk. Mr. and Mrs. Long have plenty of stories to tell. The small shed was originally built as a pump house for the 80 foot artisan well. Not to worry, the house has been on Baltimore City water since the forties, and the service line to the home was replaced about 15years ago. A new sewer line was installed just this past year.

Full dry basement with laundry and outside entrance is ready to finish and will cure all your storage problems. Stairs leading to floored attic would be an ideal area for expansion, extra room or just for "toys in the attic".

Such a charming home located in the heart of Cheswolde sitting on a half acre lot surrounded with huge century old Maple and Sycamore trees. And these wonderful trees give this property lots of shade where you can enjoy cooling breezes on the charming front porch or on the huge rear deck.

You could have a "back yard store" by planting and picking your own flowers, fruits and vegetables on this spacious half acre lot.

Location is ideal (eruv) where you can walk to numerous houses of worship.

Just minutes to Baltimore Beltway, Jones Falls Expressway, and the Mount Washington light rail stop for easy access to downtown Baltimore. Close to Greenspring Shopping Center and the new Quarry shops where you can enjoy Fresh Market and Starbucks.

Good Morning Margaret! What a nice presentation. The history of the house is very interesting and to think the owner has never lived anywhere else! That's almost unheard of any more. This sounds like a wonderful neighborhood to live in ...so full of history!

Linda, Have been in touch with this special lady for over a year. She lives in my neighborhood and on my walks,  used to toss her morning paper up on her porch.

Duane, The construction and amount of lumber used is remarkable. Thanks for stopping by.

This email came today from Janet English who referred this wonderful family to me. If you have referrals in Alabama, please call Janet!

Margaret, I just wanted to thank you again for your help with the Longs. They all sang your praises today at their closing. Mr. Long has a very, very hard time; he said he was very scared about what was happening and didn't immediately recall selling his house or buying one here. He eventually signed everything. In any case, Mrs. Long said Stacy was talking about using you. Don't know who Stacy is, but perhaps you do. Thank you again for all you did for this family.   Best Regards,     Janet English

Kelly, Your comment is appreciated.

There were a lot of memories in 85 years of living in the same home. I feel very fortunate that Activer Rainer, Janet English from Alabama, referred this family to me. Her information is in the comment above. We first spoke about this family about a year earlier.
