I just read in a realtor's blog that she sold a house on twitter.  You can read that blog post by going here:

I won't repeat the details here except to say that you should really consider getting on twitter and making good use of that free tool.

Bill: I think the above example proves that twitter can work.  However, it will only work if you use it.
