The last two years have seen online video reach the masses, and grow massively as a result. That trend has continued at a fast pace during the first half of 2008, with comScore revealing 12 billion videos were watched in the US during the month of May.

That 12 billion videos suggest a 45% increase on the same period last year, and shows a very healthy growth in online video. This is both from user-generated sites such as YouTube, and those providing streaming TV shows such as Hulu.

Ars Technica reports that 142 million unique users watched video online in May, which counts for 74% of the total internet users in the country, meaning 3 out of 4 people have watched some kind of video online.

The average user watched 85.3 videos during the month, with Google and YouTube coming top of the pile, which as a whole, accounted for 35% of the total videos viewed.

So for those still in doubt as to the validity of video on the web, and specifically the use of video in the real estate industry, online video is steamrolling through at a rapid pace..... Time to rethink your video strategy!

4 Comments on Online Video Viewing Grows Massively - 12 BILLION Videos Watched In U.S. During May

That's great news, Fred.  I've been considering moving into video for my listings and blogging.  I guess the time is right!

Fred, I  have mixed feelings about video on R.E. sites.  Some load too slowly; some take too long to play when you're in a hurry (which is most of the time)...

Brian:  What you have to understand is that video is NOT the first thing a buyer sees... it's the LAST.  After they've search for properties based on their criteria, after they've scanned the description, after they've flicked through the MLS photos.... if they are serious, and if they like what they have seen so far, THEN they view the video.

They're serious.  They're interested and they will wait for the download.

People who dismiss video are looking at video as a replacement for photographs, and I think that is a big mistake.  Photos will never be replaced.  Video is that last qualifier - and for that, people not only will wait a bit, they will watch it - over and over - scrutinizing every little detail.

So now we can add Movie Producer to the list of things on the real estate licensee resume.
