This is so easy, I'm surprised everyone's not doing it...

I've been using canvas bags to go grocery shopping for the last few years now, even doing my best to reuse the thin produce bags the next time I go in.

After scrolling through the information on this link, I am even more happy that I do it.

Please click on the link to learn about the harsh realities of plastic bags and how easy it is to buy a reusable canvas bag. They're available in so many stores now, even Target is selling them!

For when you do have to come home with a plastic bag, please make sure to use it again. Clean out your cat box, take it with you on dog walks, use them as liners in your bathroom garbage - anything that will fill it up so that the plastic goes to the landfill and NOT into the oceans.

And please, Please, PLEASE send the link on to others. We can do this!

Hey Carey,

Thanks for reminding us about the importance of not using plastic bags. I wouldn't take anything for my reusable "Harris Teeter" bags. Your stuff doesn't get messed up and they hold more than you think. I also like the longer handles... heck our family likes them so much that when we went to the beach last month we packed our cloths in them (because they fold-up nicely). Take care.

I am almost afraid to go to the link...will I find animals (like the turtle you show) suffering? Will I find people suffering? Oh...to be more mindful. Thank you for the link. Now I am going to be brave and go there...

Carey, this is indeed an issue with our marine life. I saw a similar article with those plastic rings that hold six pack together. Thanks for sharing.

Absolutely true.  My sister just got me 2 that are small enough to keep in my purse, so I don't forget and leave them in the car.  Thanks for the post!

Carey-The picture of the turtle is a little too common a scene locally. Our town in plastic bag free at this point. I am excited that we have made that step. There are efforts to make the island plastic bag free. Lets hope they are a success

I have two such bags and love the idea of putting them in my purse! Thanks for the tip.

I've been using the reusable bags as well for the last couple years. The store that I use the most gives me .06 off for every bag I use, not much, but it adds up.

Teresa - that's funny, because I was noodling on which bag to take to the beach the other day and finally decided that my big, canvas Henry's bag was the best for the job!

Bo - I've never seen those string bags. What is their benefit as opposed to the durable canvas sort?

Janeanne - although the post does have some animals getting too up close and personal with plastic, the post is not one of those that "evangelistic vegetarians" throw around to make meat eaters feel guilty. It's a little more sensitive than that. At least, I think so! What were your thoughts?

Michael - yes, I remember being taught about that in grade school, and ever since I've cut up plastic soda rings to within an inch of their lives. That is, if I ever buy them, which is rare...

Chris - what a great idea! I'm sad to say that I forget mine every once in awhile. But at least there's still the option of paper bags at checkout.

Pete - how exciting! I'm thinking about looking up exactly how to start pressuring my town to do the same thing. Any advice?

Debbie - yes, thanks to Chris for sharing that one!

Todd - mine gives 5 cents off. Sometimes they struggle to find the right code and I tell them not to bother - I don't do it for the money savings, but for the environment!
