Florida Cracker - What is it really??? No, it is not anything related to the Saltine! Many people think that it is a negative term for a Florida Native - someone born and raised in a small town. That would be WRONG!
The term CRACKER comes from the cracking sound that the cowboy's whip makes! You see, from the beginning, Florida was a cowboy's paradise! They used their whips to round up the cattle! From as far back as the mid 1700's, when Spain traded La Florida with Great Britain, this term came into use. The new settlers were cowboys! The crack of their whip was heard all day long!!! Hence the term Cracker to refer to these cowboys!!!
So when you call someone a Cracker, you are actually using an old term that has deep roots in Florida's history!!!
The Florida State Fair has an area called Cracker Country that shows how the early pioneers lived! It is well worth the visit!!!! Many schools take trips there to educate our local young about Florida's rich history!!!
