Eclectic Design: Making it work

Often times Stagers and Re-designers are faced with a miss matched selection of furniture and accessories. Making it work for your client is what staging and redesign is all about.

Before

After

With this redesign we basically were combining mid century modern and Pan-Asian pieces. Color becomes a focal point with eclectic design and matching and contrasting color is important. Orange is the primary color used to offset the white walls. We find the color in the accessories, art, and carpet. Blue stripes in the vintage club chairs adds contrast and the rattan adds more accessorized orange. Using stripes and patterns can create separate spaces for the eye to pause giving depth and interest to the room.

The room has a beautiful western view with stunning sunset and mauka views. In the afternoon the setting sun gives a warm glow to the space accentuating the orange colors and reflecting off the walls.

This vignette utilizes Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and Burmese artifacts.

The Koi banner at the entrance to the apartment with it's upturned mouth is a Feng Shui proponent of good luck and abundance.

Wish you were in Austin.  I have a client or 2 that could use this kind of expertise!  Great info.

Great work Kimo, I am not big fan of symmetry but sometimes with the right colors it works. Thank you for the pictures.

I like your ideas, do you incorporate feng shui into your stagings or was that a reference?

Thanks Kathy.

Aloha Nick, we do on-line consultations if your clients can send and receive photos via the web. Although, we can't physically stage we can give recommendations and critique.

Aloha Sonja, thank you for your comment. If you look closely I use symmetrical and asymmetric groupings. I like mixing it up myself.

Aloha Regina, I incorporate some Feng Shui ideals in almost all of my staging. However, I'm not slavish to the concepts and it has to make sense to me and the client.

Hi Kimo, I really enjoy your posts. Love the colour. I too use a lot of orange. One of my favourite decor accent colours. I also implement some feng shui elements in my Staging. Not slavish to it but it does bother me when I work with other Stagers and they place things in a unfortunate spot. If they are receptive to hearing the reason I take the time to explain the thinking behind the idea. Sometimes they listen, other times no. On the last job the realtor commented that the bed was in the wrong position as the feet were pointing out the door. I did mention it but the other Stager didn't think it was important. To many people it is and you have to be away of your market.

That is really interesting to me that you do consultations through emailed photos. Hmmm... you have me thinking again. And not just of where you live.

Aloha Michelle, mahalo nui loa, for your thoughtful input. Feng Shui in Hawaii is very popular and historically based. As many Hawaiians are of Asian decent, it is more the norm than the exception. Ancient Hawaiians practiced a similar form of environmental arrangement that incorporated architecture, interior design, and metaphysics.

I didn't realize that Kimo. Ithink I will do some reading on this over my holiday time coming up. I will have to google the topic regarding Hawaiian feng shui and see if it has a slightly different take on things. If you would like to suggest some sites, please do.

Aloha Michelle, I don't think you will find the Ancient Hawaiian tradition actively practiced today. With the introduction of Christianity to Hawaii virtually all cultural practices were considered pagan and outlawed. The Hula and the Hawaiian language barely survived the cultural degradation initiated and perpetuated by missionary interests. It wasn't until the 1970's the Hawaiian Renaissance began and the revival of Hawaiian customs and cultural practices took shape.

Aloha, Kimo! It looks like they were getting into the "moving" spirit with all the boxes - or was this a move-in redesign? I've been "quietly" incorporating Feng Shui into my stagings, many people still look at me with a blank stare when I try to explain the concepts of it - so I just do it and let them feel it instead. Fantabulous as always, Kimo ;-) Mahalo!

The after looks so much better. (I'm trying to say this with a straight face). It's just amazing how much better a properly staged home will perform- it's very much worth the energy and expense.
