Why doesn't America kill the gasoline powered cars?

This is a question that all of us would like answered. And who really has the answer to this question? The news media! (Please) The government! (Please)

I spoke with a client of mine on this subject and here is what he had to say:

80 percent of the cars in Brazil do not run on gasoline and the price of gasoline is around 17 cents per gallon. Why don't we have cars like this in America? What happen to the electric cars that GM put out back in the 1980's? Why do we need to find new areas for drilling? Why do we have to be in the Middle East? Are we in the Middle East for oil or (POWER) and (CONTROL)?

If anyone can help with some of these questions, please do!

I heard on today's news that there will be solar powered cars in 10 years - yippee!  however, we'll all be broke by then!

Hydrogen is the wave of the future - soon ( I have heard as soon as 5 years) we will have this option readily available to us and you can have a tank @ your house that fill up seperating the fuel from common air - how would that be for convience??

Robert,  There is a Documentary Film "Who killed the Electric Car?" you can check out.  Also, there area a lot of movies on the subject on You Tube.  Even a few with Tom Hanks.

Al Gore made some comments about renewable energy and urged lawmakers to take some action. I don't think they listen. Oil men have hired lobbysts working fulltime in DC. Not sure Obama has what it takes to bring drastic changes either. Alternative energey Oil will solve half of world's problem - including unprecedented inflation around the world

I have heard of technology for hydrogen generators that you can adapt for your vehicle, I am wondering if some of this stuff is surpressed, can you imagine what the oil companies would do if someone came out with transportation that would cut them out completely.  I do not think they would allow it.  perhaps I have been reading to much science fiction.

There are a lot of innovations ongoing. Hydrogen, plugged in electirc and compressed air cars all have potential, but none are clear answers. Brazil is running on sugar cane based ethanol. I am not sure that is our best avenue. We could get more brazilian ethanol, but we have tarrifs making it too expensive. Corn ethanol is not the best idea. It is sensitive to flooding and other crop failures and it has an adverse impact on food supplies. We don't have any one silver bullet, but we will need all of the potential industries to start to bear fruit and we will need better fuel efficiency as we wait for those technologies to evolve.

I hope Gore's thoughts get a good listen. Robert F Kennedy has a similar vision with a lot of detail on infrastructure overhauls to the current electrical grid necessary to make it happen. We need political will from both parties to implement his vision and we need to rise above alot ot the current partaisanship. It is encouraging to see an old oilman like T Boone Pickens getting behind Big Wind. I think that will add some legitimacy since Gore is such a polarizing figures for some on the right.

We're obviously on the brink of releasing some other method. Why else would gas keep rising unnecessarily? The old adage "Stick and Move" comes to mind.

I'm with Trunda on this....I think that the oil companies are getting the getting while the getting is good!  That's how come oil prices are up as much as they are.  The slight reprieve that we've had here over the last couple of days is simply the oil industry taing their foot off of our throats!

Hydrogen technology is ready today!  Volkswagon and BMW have working gasoline/hydrogen powered vehicles ready to sell right now.  I love BMW's slogan for them,

BMW, Ready for the future, when the future is ready for us!
