Technology - Out with the old, in with the new

Old laptopAfter much research, I have replaced my 4 ½ year old Dell laptop.  It was starting to do some strange things, however, I did get a lot of use from it.  Now, I have the task of cleaning off the old laptop and transferring the information to my new tablet pc.  New Laptop

One of my goals for the last few years has been to learn and make better use of the technology that I already pay for and to embrace any new technology that will help make my life easier.  There is a lot that can help us at home and work.  It's a matter of choosing tools that fit your needs and that you will use.  My new hp tablet functions both as a laptop and a tablet.  I have had it for about two months now and still have a lot to learn. Adding a monitor and wireless keyboard with mouse allows for more efficiency.  With two screens, I can have separate documents on each screen with the mouse moving across the two screens seamlessly.  The large monitor is easier to see and it's also at a better level for my line of vision.

My desk

This is what my desk looks like now.  I look like a real techie, don't I?  This arrangement is temporary until I can get the old laptop cleaned off. :-)

Mary, it seems like no matter how much we try, we can never quite keep up with the demands of technology...

Oh boy I have a laptop just like your old one and have had it for just about as long as you have.  Guess I better backup more frequently and start my research just in case.  I love this laptop so I hope it holds out for a while longer.

Brian:  I'm very interested in technology and have heard several different speakers on the subject.  Then, I look at the technology group and am amazed at all of the different tools available.  There are many more that I don't even know about.  It's a challenge to keep up with it.  It is something that we have to keep learning about.  It will keep our minds fresh, right?

In our business, being tech-savy is almost a must to keep up with the younger clients who are all over the internet and VERY tech-savy.

Linda:  This has been a great laptop-very durable, nice big screen, just a workhorse.  I filled up the memory with too many photos and it seems that as the laptop gets older, it has a harder time with the newer applications.  Mine would have lasted longer if I would have deleted more off of the hard-drive.  One of the tech speakers I heard recently, said that you should replace your computer if it is more than two years.  I have been getting about 4 years out of mine.

Sheila: You are right about that.  More and more of the people I work with prefer communicating with e-mail and texting.  I want to learn about podcasting but haven't gotten to that yet.  Then there is video, RSS feeds, SEO - the list goes on and on.

Mary, I would love to be as up on the technology that I already pay for as you mentioned.  I just can't find the time!  Good luck with the tablet, let us know how it works for you.  That is the direction that we would like to go!

Tony & Darcy:  I started learning my technology by taking it along in the car (only when I'm a passenger ;-)) and looking at it during the ride.  I learned more about using features on my phone, digital camera & laptop that way.  I also have worked on it during inspections, while waiting in the car or at doctor visits.  When you think about it, most of us spend a lot of time waiting somewhere.  I did a lot of research before I purchased my tablet and will share what I learned in an upcoming post.  It will take awhile to compose.  Look for that soon.  Thanks for stopping by!

Fran:  What can I say?  I'm a techie wannabe. :-)

I like the small laptops- very handy and lighter than the luggable.

Chuck:  That is one of the benefits that I am really enjoying.  My last laptop was heavy.  I just have to be careful I don't slouch while I am looking at the smaller screen on my tablet.
