The Energy of Homes from a Feng Shui Perspective

Last night I wrote about the sometimes imperceptible energy that children feel in a home.  Often times as adults we don't get the same feelings.  Feng Shui & Children: A New York Feng Shui Consultant's Thoughts by Feng Shui Long Island & NYC  It reminded me of a recent trip we were taking to go to one of our favorite old time Restaurants on Long Island located in Westbury, New York.  It's a very special place and is only open during specific hours.

Parking for this small place is difficult so we went down the block...and came across a home that was going to auction.  As a Feng Shui Consultant, I wasn't sure if I wanted to go inside; I thought the energy in the home might be very sad.  Then again, curiosity takes over; from the outside I was surprised at the condition of the home.  Westbury is a lovely town in Long Island and very convenient to shopping and dining.  It is also only one town away from Mineola, with Winthrop Hospital-one of our finest on Long Island and the Long Island Rail Road with New York City being just about ½ hour away.

Tree lined streets, manicured lawn and a perfect area to live.  The outside sign said the bidding would be starting at just $50,000 and most likely in this particular location of Westbury Long Island I would have guessed this home to previously been sold for over $600,000.

We joined the line to go inside and just as I stepped inside, I almost stopped short.  Laura noticed and was not surprised, she'd felt the same way.  So apparently had the child behind us.  Having been very well behaved I saw that as soon as he entered he started to whine.  I stood off to the side and watched as his mother pulled him inside which resulting in his crying.  I had no doubt he was feeling what some of us, grownups and other children alike were.  There was a heaviness in that house, a sadness that was overwhelming.

Laura went inside to snap a few pictures and noticed something unusual....people were on a "self" tour and viewing the downstairs but very FEW ventured upstairs.  They were mostly exiting through the back door without seeing anymore.  We both felt it was because the energy in the home was so strong...the only visible signs of any damage were on the floor as you can see from the pictures.  In fact, when I saw them I thought the house looked cared for---by someone.

Spooky!  I sometimes get feelings about things and my friends think I'm crazy, but I am usually proved right in the long run.  Great post!

It only makes sense (to me at least) that a previous occupant would leave behind some emotional garbage.  We wouldn't move into a house without cleaning it would we?

Carole--Do you know any details about what happened in the home? I have only felt that way one time when showing a home. I had to show the home twice as my clients were very interested in the property but it creeped me out in a way no other vacant home had. It was in a good neighborhood and had new paint and carpeting, a nice layout and looked very nice but there was a weird vibe from the house itself. When I called the listing agent for additional information I received the following message. "Please be advised that a murder has taken place in the home. Please consult the internet for additional details." Murder must be disclosed in MN. So...using the address, we discovered the tradegy involved a family with three young children. This home could use a Feng Shui clearing because the energy was still there!

Carole, my hometown is Westbury and I was born in Mineola. What was upstairs that was so scarey? I'd go check it out if I were there. I am the big brave adventurer!!! Call me the ghostbuster!

Carole- Did you guys ever figure out what happened, if anything, in this house?  It is amazing that the "feelings" were so strong almost immediately upon entering.

Carole- I, too, am curious about what was causing the feeling of sadness in the house. Please let us know when, or if, you find out. Did you and Laura venture upstairs?

Carole, your comment of "And you don't have to be a child....energy leaves behind IMPRINTS." Matches the sign, grin

Carole,
I, too, am interested to know if you found out more about the house.  Our inquiring minds need to know.  Goodness, we humans are a mysterious species.

Wow, Carole.  I totally believe in energy.  I never thought about it being left behind in a house though.  It makes sense now that I think about it though.  Thanks for sharing!

Homes do tell a story!  Sometimes the energy is just right and other times, you just can't get out fast enough.  Very interesting for sure!  Sometimes, the energy is not right for me, but the clients have no reaction -- this makes it a bit difficult to be objective.

Susan, It wasn't a good feeling...and I could see others had it as well.

Pam, I thought that's what it might have been...a lot of grief.  But the home had been taken care of by SOMEONE who painted and did the outside.

Teri, I'm not surprised that you felt that energy...it lingers and definitely leaves an imprint.  It certainly does need to be cleared out and I wonder if that deterred the buyers who were interested?  I believe in NY we only have a three year disclosure law....and I don't at all think that's right.

Gary, You would have been one of the few that ventured upstairs!  Whatever was in that home, most people just left....which is odd considering the location, condition AND the starting bid.  Btw, you'll probably know the restaurant I'm going to post about...Thomas on Old Country Road.

Kathy, I didn't look it up but it amazed me that the people were leaving as well....and the child becoming anxious.  I didn't think to get the address, I just wanted OUT myself!

Libby, I didn't think to get the address but will be passing it soon again on my way to a consult out that way.  I didn't go in and no, Laura didn't go upstairs either.

Duane, It does match the sign :)  I wonder who called the people to paint and do the landscaping on a home that is being auctioned off....odd, isn't it?

Cynthia, I don't know the history of the home, it may have been overwhelming sadness from whoever lived there.  I can't imagine losing a house...ANY house but this one had been loved I'd bet.

Cristal, Energy is everywhere...and leaves behind it's imprint.  All spaces have energy which is why we work in so many different kinds of places....homes, businesses, corporations.  Always interesting to see (and feel)

William, Thank you, I think it is a terrific group....You are more then welcome to post the link in case people missed it in ANY of my posts.

Joan, It is interesting, different people are more sensitive I believe....some feel it much more profoundly then others.  I am hyper sensitive and I'm not sure that's a good thing :)

Carole, Interesting story... The house had certainly a sad story to tell about the owner's family... Energy left behind in that house needs a great help of Feng Shui to be elevated. Who could dare to move there?

Carole,
I remember you and I discussing this aspect of homes quite often. Like you, I'm very perceptive to the energy in houses and some of them I can't go past the front entry. I find the sad ones the hardest to deal with.....I get a great feeling of lost hope from them. There are many very practical people who do not feel this energy and don't believe in it either. They're able to move in and it doesn't affect them at all.

I've often wondered if being overly sensitive to ambient energy is a gift or a curse. I know it can be used as a gift, as you are in your business, however to the average person it can seem like more of a curse. Life is so much simpler and seemingly more enjoyable if nothing impacts you....I think. Although maybe not.

As a former Nurse - I really do feel Elizabeth Kubler Ross 5 stages of death & dying do SOMEWHAT apply to the loss of a Home - I've seen clients experince the rollercoaster of emotions from grief to anger to depression and alas acceptance is something that may never come - so these emotions fill that space for many months before sheriff eviction!

Interesting post Carole - thanks for sharing.

Sincerely,

Grace

Who would have written the note on the door? The former owners?  Who were they asking to pick up the leaves?  Its beyond sad........its hard for me to get my head around the percentage of foreclosures in the US........as a world leader, and economic power....to have so many people lose their homes.............I wonder how the media portrays this in other countries........To have this happen in AMERICA must be mind boggling for them too!

Carole--No...The wife felt something was off but they were okay with the house until the tradgedy was disclosed. They were concerned about having to disclose again when/if they decided to sell as it does not have a time limit in MN. (I think the wife was relieved to have an excuse to not buy this house even though it seemed perfect).

It is a sad commentary, the homes that were once occupied by loving families now have to literally have signs, asking people to care about them. I'm sure the foreclosure bus tour will be by soon...
