rulerWHOSE YARDSTICK MEASURES YOUR SUCCESS?trophy

Does your company give awards for a job well done?  Do you crave the accolades that the company offers sometime in March for achieving a certain level of production? Most of us, whether we admit it or not, derive a certain sense of pleasure when we get our "cookies".  And if you don't, that's all well and good, but honestly, I appreciate a tangible recognition of a job well done.  We are mostly competitive by nature, and it never hurts to see how we stack up agaiemptypocketsnst everyone else.

This got me thinking.  This past year, I sold half the amount of homes in 2006 than I did the years prior.  Bottom line?  No kudos, no piece of paper to frame for the wall, no little statue, or pin, and worst, half the amount of income I expected.  A bit of a blow to the ego to be sure, but it makes me rethink what makes one successful.

At first, I thought: well, folks, the fat lady's singing now.  Truly pessimistic of me, I'm sure you will agree.  It was a rough year for many - not all, but many - real estate agents.  I, unlike many agents, can ride through the downtimes as I have a spouse earning a regular income with good benefits.  Without that, I, like manheroy this past year, might have had to go punch a clock somewhere. (I did take about 2 months off - that didn't help!)

Even in this market, there are new agents.  They will look at the achievers in their offices and their communities, and feel daunted by the level of success those super-agents have attained.

successBut here's the scoop folks: if you had only ONE DEAL, ONE transaction, and you did it well, maintaining highly ethical standards and behavior, you have attained a level of success that makes you a winner. Building your reputation, one client at a time, is how you will gain success.  Those clients will return in the coming years, and those clients will send others your way in the meantime.

Good luck to everyone this year, no matter what field you are in, and however you measure your own success, may that success come your way.

good points, Some agents live and die for these awards. I am happy with my checks but like to try new things and broaden my scope.

This was a good post Liz!  It's important to create your own "meaure of success" as the yardstick that others create for you can be an unrelenting task master.  Thanks for some good insights!

Thanks Eric and Lola - I wasn't feeling very successful lately, then realized I was just looking at the numbers (which in the past have been well above average, but not the best) and realized that I had received several client questionaires with great comments about me.  THAT is a far better reward than a pin or certificate!  Thanks - Liz

Great blog, Liz. First got to know you through your great GREEN blog and added you as an Associate then, so now I get all your blogs. We all have good years and bad years, and as you pointed out - if you're professional, hardworking and ethical - just keep doing it, you're doing everything right. The results are beyond our control, but the actions aren't. Good years follow bad if you keep doing what you should.

Hi Sharon!  Thanks so much for taking the time to read the blogs - I am REALLY new at this, and it truly is addictive! The hardest part seems to be keeping up and reading everything other people have written.  And by the way - I love St. Pete - my best friend from high school is down there - get down there every couple of years myself.  Take care - Liz

Liz,

Thanks for the post. You are so correct. You must believe in yourself first and realize that every time you assist a client or customer with a transaction you are a winner in their eyes and you should be in yours as well.

Welcome to the ERA group and congrats on being featured within the group.

Thanks William - I am enjoying doing the blogs (even though only 2 so far!).  It has been a great outlet for me!  I hope the new agents will realize that doing a job well and consistently will pay off in the long run.  Take care - Liz

Liz, I agree 100%!! When I started to work with ERA a year ago, coming from a very tiny company, I wasn't used to all these awards etc. I guess it is nice, but really who cares??? Most important is what YOUR goals are, are you getting the results YOU WANT? All these company awards in reality is more a distraction than inspiration. Only you know for yourself if you have achieved something or not. Great post!

Liz,

I am one of those "yellow" people (you know, the personalit test segment of implimentation) and I am very prize motivated!  I had a great year last year, but had a spouses income for support.  This year I am a single mom of two and was doing ok until I lost two deals.  With all I've gone through it was really a blow.  I have to dig down real deep and find out just what I'm made of.  I tell myself...just don't quit!  So...my measure of success right now is not quitting!  Thanks!

Jo Anne - Hi - For some reason I never looked to see f I had missed any comments, and I do apologize for not having responded to your comment! I think persistance is a very good measure of success...you should be proud for sticking it out! I hope things are rolling right along for you as the spring season gets under way - I've had deals falling apart up until last month as well.  Now they look to be holding together better.  Stupid things - $500 here and someone not willing to take of something after inspections there - just one thing after another.  Now things are looking up.  So good luck - hope you have a great remainder of a year.

Thanks Chris - still a much slower year than in prior years, but oddly my slow year still counts as a good year once I've looked at the stats in my general area.  Guess we all need to revisit our level of expectations.  Glad you found this useful!  Have a great week! Liz

You are absolutely correct! I feel very successful. I didn't make enough money to even be able to keep the lights turned on if I didn't have a husband with a good income but I doubled what I did last year, which was my first year and met my personal goals so I am successful by my own yardstick! I am hoping to triple it in my 3rd year.

Having an income producing spouse certainly helps!  I feel badly for those who don't have that consistency this year, but I am sure that when we rebound (which of course we will!) we will be the ones with return clients to hit whatever yardstick we put out there!  Thanks for commenting! And good luck with your efforts to hit your marks.

I am sorry I didn't respond, for some reason I didn't get a notice that someone had commented!  Thank you for reading, I hope some take it to heart, especially when we are dealing with a market that is pulling so many of us down. Do our jobs well, and we can persevere!  Liz
